October 30, 1970 - JIM Morrison was sentenced to 6 months in jail and fined $500, today, for exposing himself in Miami, Florida. His need to escape his trapped alter-ego, the persona he had created for himself, and from the media who preyed upon it, caused a disturbance in his mind, and he rebelled. Here we have two interviews with Morrison, both pertaining to arrests and trials; following that, a hindsight perspective from Doors member Ray Manzarek.
1973 - JOHN Lennon was one of the major voices of his generation, the baby-boomers generation, and his obsessive but common sense mantra of peace, love, and understanding were never better demonstrated than in this music, Mind Games, released today 37 years ago.
1978 - NEVER knew of this movie, Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park (also known as Kiss in the Attack of the Phantoms), but tonight's the night it had it's debut airing on the American television network, NBC-TV. It was at the height of Kiss's popularity in the United States. The film's poor acting and semi-comedic script caused it to be regarded poorly even by most Kiss fans, but despite this it has attained cult film status. The film is said to be loathed by band members for the buffoonish way the film made them appear. Thanks to youtuber vinylskirt for the footage.
1982 - PAUL Weller was anointed the modfather of Brit pop, and he was a major British musical force and influence for more than two decades, influence many British acts, including Oasis...well, Noel at least. Weller's break-through band was The Jam, an English post-punk rock/mod revival band, extremely pro-active during the late 1970s and early 1980s. They had a phenomenal 18 consecutive Top 40 singles in the United Kingdom, from their debut in 1977 to their breakup - on this day - in 1982, including four #1 hits. To remember the day Weller announced the break-up of his band, here's one of their best known hits, Going Underground. Dear reader, listen again to this total classic.
1984 - TAKING nothing away from the multi talents of Barry Manilow, here's a commercial for United Airlines that he did in this year, 1984 - the very year that he opened at Radio City Music Hall in New York. The shows sold out for $1.9 million. Manilow beat the previous record by $100,000 that was held by Diana Ross.
1986 - RIP-RAP-HOPPING along musical revolutionaries were this little trio of chameleons, and a definite influence on aspects of Eminem. I love this video, the entire parody, totally on the button. Any excuse to play Beastie Boys, and the excuse is that today was the day they released their album, Licence To Kill.
1995 - AND the inductions into the American Hall of Fame continue. Fifteen years ago it was the turn of David Bowie, Tom Donahue, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Pete Seeger, Jefferson Airplane, Little Willie John, Pink Floyd, The Shirelles and The Velvet Underground. Performing that night, was the mighty Allman Brothers band - get a dose of this total rock'n'roll. What a lineup!
2002 - NINE years ago American president, George W. Bush, signed an act that renamed the Oakwood Postal Station in Los Angeles the Nat King Cole Post Office. Not needing too much of an excuse to listen and watch some Nat, we thought we'd look at one his most unforgettable songs, from 54 years ago.
