Dear Reader,
Friday March 23, and we go from the Pope to pop, to classical, to new wave and back again.

* Psychedelic Furs show us their pretty pink wares in 1980.
* Elvis at #1 with an old German folk song as he records a new hit with an old Italian folk song in 1960.
* Adam and the Ants show a new style of rock'n'roll new music, 31 years ago.
* It's 1963 and the Beach Boys look very...er...dapper performing this hit.
* We go way back to two John Lennon events; his marriage to Yoko Ono, shown here by Australian TV pop show host, Dick Williams, and the release of Lennon's book, In His Own Write.
* Former Creedence Clearwater Revival singer, John Fogerty shows us his solo style in 1985, on this day.
* We go classical once again with a debut of one of Haydn's pieces.

October 29, 1975 - WERE they or weren't they? Did they or didn't they? It was today that Joan Baez became a member of Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue, which must've been some tour. Bob Dylan was definitely out there at this time, a unique showman, with his own take on it all. And never more so obvious than in this era, of the Rolling Thunder Revue. Check out these two examples of how out there, and how good the band was...makeup and all.

1936 - HANK Snow began making his first recordings 75 years ago today, with songs such as Lonesome Blue Yodel and Prisoned Cowboy. But this is the Bill Trader song, Now And Then There's A Fool Such As I, first made famous by Hank Snow in 1953, then Elvis had a world hit with it six years later. It's been covered and released as a single several times, by artists as diverse as Jo Stafford, Bob Dylan, but this is the hank snow version.

1956 - DIVA, opera singer, maybe the best, always invoking a response, that was the story with famed Maria callas. The American-born Greek soprano was one of the most renowned opera singers of the 20th century, combining an impressive bel canto technique, as she did, with a wide-ranging voice and great dramatic gifts. An extremely versatile singer, her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini; further, to the works of Verdi and Puccini; and, in her early career, to the music dramas of Wagner. Her remarkable musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina. This was the day, though, that Ms. Callas made her Metropolitan Opera debut in Norma. This is the amazing Maria Callas.

1957 - BUDDY Holly had many hits in his short career - a star who shone too bright - and today he released one of his best, Oh Boy! Six years down the road, and the so-called British beat group sound, led by the Beatles was infiltrating airwaves around the world. Everyone was trying to get in on the act. On October 29, 1963, a little-known harmony group known as the Hollies began recording first sessions for their debut album. And from the same year, from the Hollies, one of these song, together with one of the first ever rock videos...brilliant vintage clip.

1967 - HAIR, the musical opened today, way back then, and if you're so inclined to watch some Hair videos, go to our archive search engine. Neil Diamond was awarded a gold record 41 years ago today, for his song, Cracklin' Rosie. Diamond has written some classic songs for himself and others and no matter what you may think of Diamond, he has also been a formidable lyricist. in the day, Neil Diamond was the songwriting man.

1971 - DUANNE Allman was counted amongst the upper echelon of guitar players, and one guitar legend who loved playing alongside him was Eric clapton. Between the two of them, they came up with one of the best songs of all time, Layla, but today we have the following two vids - if you have the time - to remind us that Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident today, in Macon, GA.

1977 - MEAT Loaf released one of the most successful recordings of all time today, Bat Out Of Hell, and if you go to the *MUSICBACKTRACK* search engine you'll find some info. Also on this day, but in 1990, The Byrds, LaVern Baker, John Lee Hooker, The Impressions, Wilson Pickett, Jimmy Reed and Ike & Tina Turner were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Wilson Picket is a personal favourite of mine, and i can remember jumping off amps, alongside Bon Scott, while we were in the band the Valentines. We did a lot of Wilson Picket, and Sam & Dave songs. Only those who were truly there wold remember. And here are two good reasons why Wilson Picket was inducted 21 years ago tonight.

1996 - THIS is the day and the year that a judge in Pasadena dropped drug possession charges against Scott Weiland, the singer for the Stone Temple Pilots. The judge concluded that Weiland had made significant progress in rehab. Time showed that not to be the case, but in 1998 on this day, former members of the Dead Kennedys - East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride and D.H. Peligro - all filed suit against Jello Biafra, the band's former singer. The claim was that the former lead singer had diverted money owed to the other band members for his own use. Dead Kennedys were the first of many in a genre that grew from their take on punk, which grew into speed metal, this being their most famous song, Holiday in Cambodia.
