1941 - He would have been exactly 70 years old today, but sadly Otis Redding died at the age of just 25, and you can find out more information and videos on Otis by going to our *MUSICBACKTRACK* archive search engine. Before you do, though, this is the song that took him to the top of world charts, and was recorded just three days before he died in a plane accident.
1956 - They refused to film him below the waist, fearing his hip movements were far too sexual, so 55 years ago today, the producers of Ed Sullivan's Show filmed Elvis, waist up, performing three songs, one of which was this doozy.
1967 - Bon Scott and myself were influenced heavily by this duo, and they were one of our favourite acts of all time. Indeed, we used to sing this song, Soul Man, by Sam & Dave, the song being released today. They're still one of my favourite acts, and a great musical influence on my life - so this is Sam and Dave performing live in Offenbach, Germany, 1967.
1978 - Up and coming pseudo punk/new wave Irish act, U2, opened for the Stranglers in Dublin at the Top Hat Ballroom tonight, but we haven't found that video, if there is one, so instead howzabout the Stranglers live at Battersea Park in the same year, and again on Top Of The Pops in the same year.
1981 - Sting and Phil Collins both played their first solo sets at Amnesty's International's The Secret Policeman's Other Ball. And this is Sting.
1999 - It's now 12 years since Nine Inch Nails performed at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards, and it was their first-ever appearance on a televised award show, so is it any wonder they got a young looking Johnny Depp to introduce the band.
2003 - Eight years ago today, a concert of Kiss was broadcast simultaneously across USA in 21 theatres. The show had been recorded in February of that year, 2003, in Melbourne, Australia's Telstra Dome with the 60-piece Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. All members of the orchestra, including the conductor, wore Kiss-like make-up. This is sensational.
