1963 - It was almost a half century ago, during a chance meeting at London's Studio 51 jazz club, that John Lennon & Paul McCartney strummed an incomplete self-penned song to members of the the Rolling Stones, who were looking for some original songs to record. The Stones subsequently rearranged the song, recorded it, released it, and this hit was the result.
1964 - Raggamuffin Brit teen mod rocker, Rod Stewart, recorded his first song, today, with future Led Zeppelin member John Paul Jones playing bass. The song was Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, a blues standard that has been covered countless times since the forties, but first recorded by blues legend Sonny Boy Williamson.
1964 - It took British group Kinks three song releases before they reached #1 around the world, and the song was the timeless You Really Got Me, hitting the top spot today. Just a short note - future Led Zeppelin founder and guitarist Jimmy Page played tambourine on the track.
1966 - This is the day the Monkees released their debut song, The Last Train to Clarksville. Written by American song-writing duo, Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, the song tells the story of a soldier heading to Vietnam for his tour of duty, & making arrangements to meet his girlfriend at the train station prior to his departure, for he feared he may not return. The song has been compared to The Beatles' Paperback Writer, in the style of the jangle guitar, but also to the chord structure. But that same chord structure is prevalent in thousands and thousands of songs, so I think it a bit of musical snobbery to compare it.
1973 - Censorship of son lyric was rife at the start of the seventies, and one such instance was when the BBC Radio banned the Rolling Stones' Star Fucker. On this same day a year later, and before punk music, before glam rock, before Malcolm McLaren, there was the New York Dolls, the forerunner of them all. Along with Iggy and the Stooges, Richard Hell's Television and the Ramones, the Dolls forged their own way in American rock music. Who knows what would've happened to the band had they not split up on this day, 37 years ago.
1979 - Performing in front of 85,000 people in Florence, Italy, tonight, New York artists, Patti Smith, announced she was performing her last show, but she returned to performing three decades later. This is the great Pattu Smith at her peak, with the song she co-wrote with Bruce Springsteen.
1990 - Now a millionaire superstar of stage, music and screen, Will Smith made his debut in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air tonight, exactly 21 years ago. He was a star from the start, and here's the proof: in the same year as the show's debut, here is DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince performing I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson at that year's Grammy Awards.
1990 - The Hard Rock Cafe opened tonight in Las Vegas, Nevada, and a year later on the same day, Garth Brooks released his album, Ropin' the Wind. And in 1992, on the same day, New York-based radio star, Howard Stern, appeared as Fartman on the MTV Video Music Awards. And here he is, live, doing what he does best…blowing wind out his backside.

A year later, and American supermarket chain and record retailer, Wal-Mart, banned Sheryl Crow's 2nd album because of the song Love is A Good Thing. The song contains the lyrics: "Watch out sister, watch out brother, watch our children while they kill each other with a gun they bought at Wal-Mart discount stores." Onya Cheryl.
