* Psychedelic Furs show us their pretty pink wares in 1980.
* Elvis at #1 with an old German folk song as he records a new hit with an old Italian folk song in 1960.
* Adam and the Ants show a new style of rock'n'roll new music, 31 years ago.
* It's 1963 and the Beach Boys look very...er...dapper performing this hit.
* We go way back to two John Lennon events; his marriage to Yoko Ono, shown here by Australian TV pop show host, Dick Williams, and the release of Lennon's book, In His Own Write.
* Former Creedence Clearwater Revival singer, John Fogerty shows us his solo style in 1985, on this day.
* We go classical once again with a debut of one of Haydn's pieces.

September 24, 1942 - THE regular, thrice-weekly Glenn Miller radio broadcasts for Chesterfield Cigarettes reached the end of the line today, when Miller packed up his bags to go fight for his country in World War 2. The jazz swing-era trombone musician, arranger, composer, & bandleader disappeared two years later, while flying in bad weather to a U.S. troops show in France. For more Glenn Miller go to our archives, Here's Miller with Tex Beneke & one of the greatest dance routines in movies by the Nicholas Brothers, from '42 movie, Orchestra Wives. That's followed by Chattanooga Choo Choo, the first gold record presented to Miller by RCA Victor records.

1955 - It's now 56 years to the day since superstar of stage & screen, Judy Garland, made her television debut on the American show, Ford Star Jubilee on the CBS network. We have a treasure trove of Judy Garland at our archives, just do a search. Meanwhile, check out her very first TV appliance.

1977 - I am told everyone watched The Love Boat during the seventies, so I must've been otherwise engaged, but regardless of my misspent seventies, this very night in '77 is when the popular show debuted on ABC-TV in America, and then around the world. The theme song was sung by Jack Jones and written by Paul Williams and Charles Fox. And if you need a memory-nudge for the theme song or the show, here are the opening credits.

1984 - The Culture Club were a sensation in the early 80s, and I can remember seeing them perform live in New York city around this time, Boy George hysteria almost at its zenith. This is the day their song, Karma Chameleon, became the group's second #1, & the biggest selling song of the year. Just a little fact, the ear-catching harmonica part was played by Judd Lander, a member of 60s Merseybeat group, The Hideaways. For more Boy George go to our archives.

1988 - Former new music post-punk pioneer, Graham Parker, opened a solo acoustic tour of the UK today, and in the same year, James Brown was arrested in Georgia after a two state car chase. Every now and then, a song comes seemingly out of nowhere, completely unique and sticks in everyone's mind, and one such song on this day in 1988, was Bobby McFerrin's Don't Worry, Be Happy. Remember the joy of this song?

1991 - Believe it or not it is 20 years today, since Nirvana's album Nevermind was released. It came from a new generation, & forged a new genre and direction for rock music. Nevermind remains on of rock's most important albums, Kurt Cobain, a rock icon. Here's an internet/youtube skim over the album. For more *MUSICBACKTRACK* Nirvana, go to our blog archive and search engine.

1991 - As if to confirm that popular music now had a multitude of endless popular genres, on the same day and year as Nirvana released their landmark LP, a band called A Tribe Called Quest released their popular and mainstream album, The Low End Theory, giving us another perspective on yet another style of rap. check this out - 20 years ago.
