September 23, 1952 - IT'S almost 60 years ago today since country music icon, Hank Williams, walked out of the recording studio after completing what would become his final recording session. One of the songs recorded during that session was the timeless, slow country blues shuffle, Your Cheatin' Heart, since covered by a multitude of A-graders, including Ray Charles & Elvis. The song about unfaithful lovers was inspired, so the story goes, by his first wife, Audrey Williams, whilst he was driving his second wife, Nellie Jean Jones, whom he asked to jot down the lyrics as he thought of them. Here we have a version of the song from Jerry Lee Lewis, with Keith Richards, and Mick Fleetwood on drums. But before that, the original from Hank, in a scene from  the British TV mini-series, lipstick On Your Collar - with a very young Ewan McGregor, by the way, in his first acting role.

1956 - This is the day a young nine-year old Mickey Dolenz began his television career in America, on NBC's Circus Boy - more than half a century ago. TV in America, Germany, UK, Holland Russia had been in its infancy stages since the 30s. Dolenz was later one of the Monkees, and you can see all the Monkees you want by going to our search engine. Meanwhile, here's Mickey in Circus Boy. Are you old enough?

1967 - People Are Strange was released by the Doors, and if you want to see this video just go to our search engine and tap in the song. Two years later on the same day & London's Daily MirrorIt reported that Paul McCartney was dead. In 1972 one of the great rock songs - certainly in my top 10 rockers - was released by a great rock'n'roll band, Mott The Hoople. They were about to break up when David Bowie stepped in, gave them this song and produced the album, which took Mott from potential has-beens to credible Brit rockers, leaving behind some solid songs.

1974 - Heroin got to claim another rocker today, when Average White Band's Robbie McIntosh died of an overdose at just 24yo. In 1997, on the anniversary of his death, MCA Records reissued Scottish band Average White Band's label debut Show Your Hand as part of the band's 25th anniversary. Here are two videos for the band's best songs, first up, Pick Up The Pieces, recorded live in 1988, at the 40th anniversary of Atlantic Records, then Cut The Cake. Far from average band.

1996 - It's Sweden, 1996, and former Abba, Agnetha Faltskog, published her autobiography, As I Am. This is one of Abba's first songs - in fact, it was the first song released from their album, Abba. It was Abba's worst international hit in terms of record sales, but personally, I think it is one of their top five songs. Do you remember this song from Abba? A glam foot-stomper.

1997 - Jackson Brown's career has sustained four decades now, and 14 years ago today, Elektra Entertainment released The Next Voice You Hear: The Best of Jackson Browne. What were you doing in the seventies when everyone was singing this song? Here's Browne, explaining and singing the song.

1999 - Shirley Manson from Garbage did not seem to me to be the type of musician to release a cosmetic, but sure enough, 12 years ago today, Ms. Manson unveiled her own line of lip gloss. Loved Shirley, loved Garbage...in the same year as the lip gloss she was performing this song in front of an Arena audience at Le Zenith in Paris. Following that is their hit, Stupid Girl, at Glastonbury. Two great songs, two great performances, great band…& lip- glossed, tough Shirley. That'll do me.
