1933 - It's 78 years today since one of country music's pioneers, Jimmy Rodgers, began his final recording session, a series of 24 songs. The country singer was known widely for his rhythmic yodelling. Among the first country music superstars and pioneers, Rodgers was also known as The Singing Brakeman, The Blue Yodeler, and The Father of Country Music. During this last recording session, after years of fighting tuberculosis, Rodgers was so weakened that he needed to rest on a cot between songs. Rodgers died later in the month, on May 26, 1933, from a lung hemorrhage while staying at the Taft Hotel; he was only 35 years old.
1963 – It's 1963, rock'n'roll moving into its second phase, on the cusp of Beatlemania, and in England, on May 17, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, and Little Richard - amongst the handful of r'n'r architect originators - appeared on the same bill for the first time. The lyrics, the earthy feel, the showmanship, the rhythm, the audaciousness of it all at this time...this was rock'n'roll.
1967 - Bob Dylan was becoming a living legend, it was the summer of love, and the movie documentary Don't Look Back premiered in San Francisco. The doco was essentially based on Bob Dylan's 1965 British tour. He was an atheist back then, I think. Do you think? Second video sees Dylan in anger, drunken anger.
1975 - The Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger accidentally put his hand through a window at Gorman's restaurant on Long Island, today, and this same day, just last year, was the day of re-release of Exile On Main street, originally released in 1972. Exile on Main St. was the tenth studio album by The Rolling Stones, and released as a double LP in May 1972. It explores a few genres, including rock & roll, blues, country, soul and even a little cute calypso. Exile on Main St. was initially greeted by reviewers with either condemnation or high praise, but in the ensuing 36 years, it has become almost universally regarded as a rock'n'roll masterpiece. So...how about Rocks Off.
1978 - On May 17, 33 years ago, Lou Reed began his famous week-long stand at New York’s Bottom Line club. The concerts were taped for his live album Take No Prisoners. No can do on a video from then, but, same venue, just a coupla years later...still live...still Lou Reed...Sweet Jane
1983 - David Bowie drove to outback Australia, bleached blonde hair, makeup, went inside a pub, and shot the video for his #1 hit around the world, Let's Dance. A simple video, and that is its magic.
2003 - This is also the day, May 17, when thinking rockers Radiohead kicked off an intimate club tour at Dublin’s Olympia. The gig was part of their promotional tour, for their new album Hail to the Thief. After that, same month, same tour only in Japan, and this song is Creep.
2004 – Rising rock revivalists Jet (Are You Gonna Be My Girl?) are forced to cancel the remaining leg of their Australian tour “due to a serious family illness.” However, this is them, live at the Budokan, before the announcement.
