Dear Reader,
Friday March 23, and we go from the Pope to pop, to classical, to new wave and back again.
* Pope John Paul II had a dabble in pop music 13 years ago today when he released his debut album.
* Psychedelic Furs show us their pretty pink wares in 1980.
* Elvis at #1 with an old German folk song as he records a new hit with an old Italian folk song in 1960.
* Adam and the Ants show a new style of rock'n'roll new music, 31 years ago.
* It's 1963 and the Beach Boys look very...er...dapper performing this hit.
* We go way back to two John Lennon events; his marriage to Yoko Ono, shown here by Australian TV pop show host, Dick Williams, and the release of Lennon's book, In His Own Write.
* Former Creedence Clearwater Revival singer, John Fogerty shows us his solo style in 1985, on this day.
* We go classical once again with a debut of one of Haydn's pieces.
* And classical again, this time with the debut of Handel's Messiah in 1743.

May 18, 2011

1963 - The Beatles began their first headlining tour at the Grenada Theatre in Slough, England, just two years short of half a century ago...in case you needed reminding! Seems like that show wasn't filmed, such a pity, but this little gem of a concert was filmed, and it comes directly from an movie newsreel in the same week; so very rare, so brilliant. Says it all. Beatlemania in a nutshell. Following that, their famous performance at the Royal Gala Performance. A MUST SEE!!!

1968 - Tiny Tim's Tiptoe through the Tulips was released. It was originally a number one hit for Nick Lucas in 1929, but Herbert B. Khaury, better known by the stage name Tiny Tim resurrected the song and made it a smash hit around the world. Tiny Tim was an American singer, ukulele player, and musical archivist. He was most famous for his rendition of Tiptoe Through the Tulips sung in a distinctive high falsetto/vibrato voice. He was generally regarded as a novelty act, though his many recordings indicate his wide knowledge of American songs. He had no official middle name, though some web sites report it to be "Butros", his father's first name, but during his televised wedding, his middle name was given as Buckingham. His headstone reads Khaury/Herbert B/Tiny Tim/1932-1996. OK folks, here's but another influence on Lady Ga Ga...two clips from this genius of pop music.

1969 - It's May 18, it's 42 years ago, and the Beatles hit #1, with this song, performed here on the roof of their Apple Corporation London office block. Just three years later, the group had acrimoniously split, their reported 17 million English pounds fortune, frozen as they sued each other. It was so sad to see at the time.

1982 – Joe Strummer reappeared after fleeing from the now-successful Clash and moving to Paris for a month. At the time he claimed his disappearance was due to exhaustion and doubts about his career. The Clash were one of the best al la naturale bands of all time, for me. Here's a song about American imperialism, Charlie Don't Surf. Plus The Magnificent Seven PLUS a very surprising interview with U.S. newsmanTom Snyder.

2005 - Elvis Presley is named the most successful artist of all time, just six years ago today, by the English version of the Guinness Book of Records. The tally is bizarre as it's based on the total number of weeks he spent on the UK singles and album charts. In at No. 2 waa Cliff 'Devil Woman' Richard. Same year, same day and Australian pop star songstress siren, Kylie Minogue, began treatment for breast cancer in Melbourne. The Australian prime minister John Howard sent the Can’t Get You Out of My Head singer his best wishes. And here's the promotional video of that song, just as a reminder, for our  *MUSICBACKTRACK* American readers, of exactly who Kylie Minogue is.
