February 16, 1964 - TRULY HISTORIC footage follows, of the  Beatles and Ed Sullivan, and television in general, as the British music phenomenon made its debut on an American stage. From the cute curtain raising to the telegram from Elvis, this is worth a look. For more Beatles go to the search engine on this daily blog and scan the archives.

1968 - ARETHA FRANKLIN recorded Spanish Harlem today, a deliciously beautiful song, written by Jerry Leiber and Phil Spector and produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, all music legends now. But the original Spanish Harlem was released by Ben E. King eight years earlier, in 1960. During a 2009 interview, Jerry Leiber said that Stoller, while uncredited, had written the key instrumental introduction to the record, and created the fill/middle eight/bridge. Iconic industry figures Ahmet Ertegun and Jerry Wexler at Atlantic Records, first heard the song with Spector playing guitar and Jerry Leiber doing the vocal. The song was King's first hit away from the fabulous Drifters, a group he had led for several years. Not sure what year this is, but it is King in his later years, in the past 10 years, live on the David Letterman Show. An iconic song that stands the test of time, just like the singer of this version, For more Ben E King, Phil Spector Aretha Franklin and Lieber & Stoller, scan this daily blog's archive.

1971 - MURDER AT A STONES concert happened 41 years ago today, and this is amazing, slomo live footage showing the accused man, Alan David Pasaro, clearly stabbing his gun-waving victim. The tragedy happened at the Rolling Stones tragic Altamont concert. Here, Jagger and company watch the footage in a studio, after the event, and are visibly struck by the tragedy. Alan David Pasaro sued the Rolling Stones, charging them with invasion of privacy. The charge stemmed from the footage of a stabbing in the film Gimme Shelter. Pasaro was tried and acquitted for the stabbing death. Who is guilty of what?

1972 - RICKY NELSON, the young stalwart of pop music, television and acting, had one of his biggest hits, Garden Party, a biographical story about being in the barren musical desert after being the biggest teen idol in the world. during the fifties, the music and film indys=ustry was tern with teenage idols, but Nelson had been an idol for much of his life. For details of his entertainment life before he was a teen pop star, use this daily blog's search engine.

1984 - JERRY LEE LEWIS surrendered to federal authorities today and answered income tax evasion charges. He was later acquitted. Jerry Lee sure as hell has had a wild life, and in this very year, he paid his respects to Australian rock songwriter Johnny O'Keefe with this live version of O'Keefe's song, Wild One, or Real Wild Child.  Written by Johnny Greenan, Johnny O'Keefe, and Dave Owens, and O'Keefe was the first artist to record it, on his debut EP Shakin' at the Stadium, released on the Festival label. This version, ostensibly recorded live at the Stadium, was in fact a studio recording, overdubbed with the sound of a real audience. It differs from the version released in the USA and UK, which was re-titled Real Wild Child. Following are a few versions of the song, including Iggy Pop's Jerry Lee's, and the original, very tame-now version from the guy who wrote it. Incidentally O'Keefe's version was the very first Australian rock song to make the music charts, and it peaked at #20.

1990 - TROUBLED IKE TURNER was sentenced to 4 years in prison on cocaine charges, today, adding to his list of personal setbacks. Regardless of the guys bad choices, and his own personal afflictions, he was an astounding rythm'n'blues, soul rock'n'roller. This is the man, a decade later, live with his band North sea Jazz festival 2002, singing Sly Stone's song, Higher.

1991 - THE SIMPSONS were on top of charts around the world today, with the rap tune, Do The Bartman. The song was written by Michael Jackson and Bryan Loren, and was the first cartoon characters to top music charts since the Archies' hit Sugar Sugar in 1969. Jackson was a massive fan of The Simpsons and had called the producers one night offering to write Bart a number one single and do a guest spot on the show. The song was written and produced by Jackson, and Bryan Loren. Jackson did not receive any credit because he was under contract to another record label. Do the Bartman was never officially released as a single in the United States, but placed first on the singles charts in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, and the United Kingdom. The video became a hit on the American network MTV and received a nomination at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards.

1993 - THE LEGENDARY FACES featured a well organised revival reunion st the Brit Awards, almost 20 years ago today. Held at London's Alexandra Palace, the event paid homage to the legendary band with Rolling Stone Bill Wyman picking up bass duties.

1999 - ROBBIE WILLIAMS won three awards at this year's Brit Awards, the singer receiving Best British solo artist, Best Single for Angels, and Best Video for Millennium. Like him or not, this following live video of him performing his song, Angels demonstrates clearly the power of music uniting a large gathering of people into one major, powerful energy.
