Dear Reader,
Friday March 23, and we go from the Pope to pop, to classical, to new wave and back again.
* Pope John Paul II had a dabble in pop music 13 years ago today when he released his debut album.
* Psychedelic Furs show us their pretty pink wares in 1980.
* Elvis at #1 with an old German folk song as he records a new hit with an old Italian folk song in 1960.
* Adam and the Ants show a new style of rock'n'roll new music, 31 years ago.
* It's 1963 and the Beach Boys look very...er...dapper performing this hit.
* We go way back to two John Lennon events; his marriage to Yoko Ono, shown here by Australian TV pop show host, Dick Williams, and the release of Lennon's book, In His Own Write.
* Former Creedence Clearwater Revival singer, John Fogerty shows us his solo style in 1985, on this day.
* We go classical once again with a debut of one of Haydn's pieces.
* And classical again, this time with the debut of Handel's Messiah in 1743.

January 9, 1997 - DAVID Bowie performed his 50th Birthday Bash concert (the day after his birthday) at Madison Square Garden, New York with guests Frank Black, Sonic Youth, Robert Smith of The Cure, The Foo Fighters, Lou Reed, and Billy Corgan and Placebo. Proceeds from the concert went to the Save The Children fund. Following are videos of Bowie performing with Foo Fighters, Lou Reed, and Frank Black.

1955 - ROSEMARY Clooney was at #1 on the UK singles chart and in many countries around the world with Mambo Italiano, the singer's second #1 hit. The song was banned by all ABC network-owned stations in the United States because it "did not reach standards of good taste". Absurd.

1961 - BERT Kaempfert started a three week run on top of American charts - and later around the world - with Wonderland By Night. Kaempfert was the man who produced The Beatles' first recording session when they were in Hamburg. He also wrote the music for Strangers In The Night and later worked with Johnny Mathis. Enjoy these 1960 New York scenes - check out the fashion.

1961 - Bob Newhart went to top of the charts on the US album chart with his album, The Button Down Mind Strikes Back! This is Newhart's Bus Driver Training skit from his Button Down Comedy stand-up show, and recorded in 1995. The skit was originally found on the album, released in 1960.

1963 - CHARLIE Watts joined The Rolling Stones after leaving Blues Incorporated, and six years later on the same day, 1969, the Beatles were at #1 around the world with the White Album, the Rolling Stones were at #2 with Beggars Banquet and The Seekers were at No.3 with Best Of The Seekers. This is also the day in 1973 when Lou Reed married an actress/cocktail waitress called Betty Kronstadt in New York. Meanwhile at the Olympia in Paris, a couple of months later, Lou Reed was performing the following three songs, live; Walk On The Wild Side, Heroin and White Light, White Heat.

1973 - MICK Jagger was refused a Japanese visa, today, on account of a 1969 drug conviction, thus causing The Rolling Stones to cancel their tour of Japan. Three years later on the same day, and Queen were at #1 all over the world with Bohemian Rhapsody. The song enjoyed a nine week run on world charts, selling more than a million copies by the end of the month. It reached the top again in 1991 for five weeks following Freddie Mercury's death, eventually becoming one of the biggest selling recorded songs of all time. how about this stirring version, live from Wembley.

1977 - EMMYLOU Harris married record producer Brian Ahern today. At the time Emmylou was riding high on the charts with a country music standard, Making believe, written by Jimmy Work and covered during 50 years or so by acts such as Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton and our Emmylou Harris. Is there a neon sweeter than Emmy? Here she is on the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977.

1979 - The music for UNICEF concert took place in New York City featuring Rod Stewart, The Bee Gees, Earth Wind and Fire, Abba and Donna Summer. It happened inside the United Nations auditorium, and following are two classic performances; firstly ABBA live, and just amazing, followed by Andy Gibb, who soon afterwards succumbed to a life of addiction and, finally, his mortal demise.

1982 - THE HUMAN League went back to #1 on album charts with their third album, Dare. The album was recorded between March and September 1981, and first released in the UK on 20 October 1981, then subsequently around the world in mid 1982. The style of the album is the result of the rapid evolution of The Human League from experimental avant-garde electronic group into a commercial pop group under Philip Oakey's creative direction following the departure of fellow founding members Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh. Dare became critically acclaimed and has proved to be a genre-defining album, whose influence can still be felt in many areas of pop music. The album and its four singles were hugely successful commercially, with the album being certified Triple Platinum.

2005 - ELVIS Presley went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with Jailhouse Rock, originally a hit in 1957. The single sold just 21,262 copies to reach No.1, the lowest sales ever for a UK chart topper since data began in 1969. this was a sign to come, due in the main, to internet sales. The single was released to celebrate the 70th anniversary of his birth, a previous Elvis chart topper was re-released each week. This video is now 55 years ago - still timeless, still one of the most exciting performance videos of all time.
