Dear Reader,
Friday March 23, and we go from the Pope to pop, to classical, to new wave and back again.
* Pope John Paul II had a dabble in pop music 13 years ago today when he released his debut album.
* Psychedelic Furs show us their pretty pink wares in 1980.
* Elvis at #1 with an old German folk song as he records a new hit with an old Italian folk song in 1960.
* Adam and the Ants show a new style of rock'n'roll new music, 31 years ago.
* It's 1963 and the Beach Boys look very...er...dapper performing this hit.
* We go way back to two John Lennon events; his marriage to Yoko Ono, shown here by Australian TV pop show host, Dick Williams, and the release of Lennon's book, In His Own Write.
* Former Creedence Clearwater Revival singer, John Fogerty shows us his solo style in 1985, on this day.
* We go classical once again with a debut of one of Haydn's pieces.
* And classical again, this time with the debut of Handel's Messiah in 1743.

January 17, 1979 - LINDA RONSTADT, EMMYLOU HARRIS, & DOLLY PARTON...equally sweet, strong, talented, soulful and beautiful; today they announced they'd record an album together. It took another right years before their wish came true, but the result was pure magic, remains magic...pretty close to perfect, and good fun to boot...indeed, here are two songs from this superstar trio.

1969 - CHARLIE WATTS released his own book years before Keith Richards wrote his book and many years before Mick Jagger wrote his book; a book that was entitled Ode to a High Flying Bird, which was published 42 years ago today today. The book was a tribute to the great jazz man, Charlie Parker. How well do you know Charlie Watts? Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to one of the greats of drumming, Mr. Cool - the Charlie Watts you never thought you'd get to know. Watch this brilliant mini-blogodoc.

1967 - JIMI HENDRIX Experience recorded a session for Radio Luxembourg's Ready Steady Radio, today. The band ran up a bar bill of GBP£2.5 shillings, ($6.21), and were so broke they were unable to pay. Two years later, rock music changed forever, when Led Zeppelin released their debut album on various dates around the world, during this week. I can remember a bunch of my mates and I, all of us in a band, the Valentines, the week this album was released, all laying down on our backs on the lounge room floor floor, eyes up to the ceiling-installed flashing lights in our rented apartment in Toorak Road, South Yarra, in Melbourne, Australia -all stoned off our heads on hash, and thinking we were in nirvana. On this album Jimmy Page creates the guitar riff as a key songwriting component, and along with the playing and singing of other band members this LP became a turning point  in the evolution of hard rock and heavy metal. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it 29th on the magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. From 1969, this is Led Zeppelin live.

1971 - MARVIN GAYE sang the U.S national anthem at SuperBowl V in Miami, Florida, today. This one's not available, but the very first one from three years earlier is on youtube, so here it is...traditional as…and my how times change.

1992 - MICHAEL JACKSON...the Legend Continues aired on CBS-TV today, exactly 20 years ago to the day. Regardless of what anyone says, MJ was the man when it came to dance, pop and innocence. So, so maligned by a vicious and ugly media, a dark side of human nature oozed its way out of the darkness. Here's a small part of this magic documentary about this magic man.

1996 - PINK FLOYD was officially inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. Unbelievable that it took all that time for Pink Floyd to be inducted, but here they are in all their glory.

1998 - SAVAGE GARDEN started a two week run at #1 on the US singles chart with Truly Madly Deeply, a song by the Australian pop duo. Written by band-mates Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones, the song is a reworking of a song called Magical Kisses that the pair wrote together long before recording began on their debut album. Truly Madly Deeply was released as the third single from their self-titled debut album. In 1998, it became the main theme from the soundtrack of the movie Music from Another Room, starring Jude Law and Gretchen Mol.

1998 - ALL SAINTS scored their first #1 single with Never Ever. The track spent a total of twenty-four weeks on the UK chart and was the first of five #1 singles for the London based girl group. Good songs, not very good live. Nevertheless, five #1 hits is a pretty amazing accomplishment.

1999 - CYNDI LAUPER was a voice on the TV show The Simpsons. Couldn't find it anywhere, dear reader, so how about this killer performance with Jessica Simpson & the great Patti Labelle. Get Cyndi's final note...better than any Simpsons voiceover.
