March 5, 1963 - PATSY CLINE changed the face of country music and pop music through her life as a performer, but it was cut way too short today when she was killed, aged 30, in a private plane crash, at the height of her career. They called it the worst country music tragedy, and to make matters worse, her two country music mates Cowboy Copas, and Hawkshaw Hawkins died in the plane crash, just near Nashville, Tennesee, USA. Posthumously, millions of her records have been sold over a 50-year span. She has been given numerous awards and accolades, leading some fans to view her as an icon similar to legends such as Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. Ten years after her death, in 1973, she became the first female solo artist inducted to the Country Music Hall of Fame. Following are four of her best-known songs; Crazy, a ballad composed by Willie Nelson; her biggest chart hit to that point, She's Got You; I Fall To Pieces, and Walkin' After Midnight.

1955 - ELVIS PRESLEY supposedly made his first TV appearance on the Louisiana Hayride Show tonight, way back 37 years ago. They say that on March 5 , 1955, at the Municipal Auditorium Shreveport, Louisana Elvis had his debut, and though I've tried and tried, there's no sign of this film, so instead, how about this little piece of magic footage from the CBS Stage show just a few months later. Two songs, both the same, and both were hits for Bill Haley and the Comets. Elvis was so great in those early, raw days. Have you seen this footage before?

1968 - JERRY LEE LEWIS opened in the rock musical adaptation of Othello in Hollywood, California, today. When asked about Shakespeare, Lewis said: “Hell, so many words, this Shakespeare was really somethin’, I wonder what he would’ve thought of my records?” The opening night of Catch My Soul was a great success and Burt Bacharach, Andy Williams, Zsa Gabor and Tom Jones all queued up, trying to get inside the dressing room to congratulate Jerry. Can't show you a video because it has been taken off youtube due to the fact that at least five people have claimed copyright infringement so the clip has been removed. Jerry had no say in it. Sad state of affairs, really, so instead, howzabout this version of his hit country song, What Made Milwauke Famous.

1977 - BARBRA STREISAND started a three week run at #1 on the charts around the world today, with Love Theme From A Star Is Born, her second chart topping song. Streisand is a modern-day phenomenon. An American singer, actress, film producer and director, she has won two Academy Awards, eight Grammy Awards, five Emmy Awards including one Daytime Emmy,a Special Tony Award, an American Film Institute award, a Peabody Award, and is one of the few entertainers who have won an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award. Ms. Streisand is one of the most commercially and critically successful entertainers in modern entertainment history, with more than 71.5 million albums shipped in the United States and 140 million albums sold worldwide. She is the best-selling female artist on the Recording Industry Association of America's Top Selling Artists list, the only female recording artist in the top ten, and the only artist outside of the rock and roll genre. Along with Frank Sinatra, Cher, and Shirley Jones, she shares the distinction of being awarded an acting Oscar and also recording a number-one single on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.

1979 - JAPAN gave their debut live concert in the land of the rising sun when they played the first of two nights at Tokyo's Budokan Hall, tonight. Japan were a British New Wave group that formed in 1974 in Catford, South London. The band achieved success in the late 70s, early 80s, when it was associated with the burgeoning New Romantic fashion movement (downplayed by the band). They achieved several UK hits in the early 1980s, most notably Ghosts & I Second That Emotion, which were top ten hits in 1982.

1982 - BLUES BROTHER JOHN BELUSHI died of a drug overdose exactly 30 years ago today, of a drug overdose; a speedball intravenous shot of a heroin/cocaine combo. He was staying at Hollywood's famous Chateau Marmont Hotel, and was just 33 years old. Here's a TV report on Belushi produced on the evening of his death. A comic genius, for sure, and from March 5th, 1982, this is an excerpt from the original broadcast of ABC News' Nightline with Ted Koppel, reporting on the death of Belushi, who had died earlier that day. It was alleged that the drug combo had been administered by Cathy Smith, who is seen here being handcuffed and put into a police car, only to be released later after questioning.

2002 - THE OSBOURNES kicked off Reality TV in earnest on this date, exactly a decade ago tonight, when MTV began airing The Osbournes, a reality television show which followed the daily activities of rock musician Ozzy Osbourne and his family. Here's a couple of clips to remind you that no matter how rich, privileged or famous one is, someone still has to clean up the dog shit and piss.
