November 7, 1958 - EDDIE Cochran was just 22yo when he died in 1960, leaving behind a small but integral and everlasting influence on rock'n'roll. Today's the day when his song, Summertime Blues, made its chart debut around the world. Cochran followed this uniquely-styled rockabilly song with more of the same, Somethin' Else, and C'mon Everybody. His lyrics captured teenage frustration and desire in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and his guitar sound was different. He experimented with multi-tracking guitar and vocal sounds, overdubbing even on his earliest singles. Also able to play piano, bass and drums, his image as a sharply dressed, rugged but good looking young man meshed with a rebellious attitude, & epitomized the stance of the fifties rocker. As rock critic Lester Bangs wrote in Rolling Stone, in 1972: "His influence on pop consciousness of the magnitude of The Beatles and The Who was deep and profound." In the 51 years since his death, Eddie Cochran has received the iconic status he deserves, helped by covers of his songs from acts such as The Who, Beach Boys, Beatles, Dick Dale & his Del-Tones, Blue Cheer, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Humble Pie, Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, UFO, The White Stripes, Stray Cats, Tommy and the Guns, and the Sex Pistols. Following are two of his hits, followed by a new mix by eddie's shreddies, of a tribute song to Cochran, performed by early sixties Brit rocker, Heinz. The song, Just Like Eddie, was a hit at the time, and thanx for youruber joemeek304 for posting. And thanks to Joe Meek.
1967 - REG Dwight (later to be known as Elton John), and his song writing partner Bernie Taupin signed to music publishing company, DJM 44 years ago today, their signatures having to be witnessed by their parents, because both were under 21 years of age. Taupin had answered an advertisement for a lyric writer, placed in the New Musical Express. The pair have since collaborated on over 30 albums. This is now vintage footage.
1975 - ON the same day, just eight years after signing his publishing contract, Elton John started a three week run at #1 on the American album charts with Rock Of The Westies, the singers seventh American #1. Six years later, again on the same day, Hall and Oates began a two week run on top of world charts with the song, Private Eyes, the duo's third worldwide hit. this is the day, too, in 1986 when Tracey Pew, bassist with The Birthday Party, died during an epileptic, and a year later Bruce Springsteen went topped world charts with Tunnel Of Love. And it's now 24 years to the day since Tiffany became the youngest act to score a #1 hit on American charts, since Michael Jackson's Ben, in 1972. And this was her hit, the old Tommy James & the Shondells song, I Think we're Alone Now. This is the 15 year old Tiffany.
1986 - IT was 24 years ago today that Willie Nelson made a guest appearance on the American TV series, Miami Vice, as a corrupt policeman. This is the vid, dear reader, but it's not very long and a bit disappointing to be honest. So we follow with a video from the same year, with Willie Nelson & Waylon Jennings performing Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys at Farm Aid II in Austin, Texas on July 4, 1986.
1988 - JOHN Fogerty won his self-plagiarism court battle with the gestapo management at Fantasy Records today. The label claimed Fogerty copied his own song, Run Through The Jungle when he wrote The Old Man Down The Road - as if it was their business anyway. But to think they could control it at all, shows extreme arrogance of the highest order. So the sun of fairness shone today for Fogerty, and to celebrate here is Old Man Down The Road, performed live at London's Royal Albert Hall. John Fogerty rocks like nobody else. Apologies for Vevo's terrible upload quality at the end, and the advert before the song.
1991 - THIS was the day Frank Zappa's daughter, Moon Unit, sadly announced her father would not be able to attend a concert because he was ill from having prostate cancer. He died two years later, aged 52. Zappa was an eccentric, but ahead of his time with his philosophies, and a visionary on many levels. He foresaw the current state of America's corruption, the AIDS virus, and many other aspects of society. He left us with an amazing body of work, including this beautiful piece of improvisational guitar work. Zappa is up there with the best...John Coltrane, Miles Davis, T. Monk et al. Here is Zappa live in Budapest, the year he discovered his prostate cancer.
1991 - THIS extravagant movie trailer from 1954's movie musical Brigadoon, shouts loud of the triumphs of the original Brigadoon Broadway musical. And says it all for the Broadway revival version, which opened today, 19 years ago today.
1995 - REMEMBER Captain and Tenille? Would you believe they renewed their wedding vows today? It was their 20th anniversary. Their real names were Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille, and these songs epitomise their sound.
1997 - TODAY'S the day the Spice Girls decided to sack their manager, Simon Fuller, and his 19 management team. Two years later and Geri Halliwell went to #1 on the UK singles chart with Lift Me Up, beating former Spice colleague, Emma Bunton's single, which entered the chart at #2. Sales of Geri's single were helped by front-page press reports about her dating famous London DJ, Chris Evans.
