November 29, 1996 - TINY Tim (Herbert Khaury) died from a heart attack on stage, today, while playing his hit Tiptoe Through the Tulips, at a club in Minneapolis. The American singer and ukulele player was a jukebox of songs from all genres, and a singing music historian. The American singer and ukulele player was most famous for his rendition of the song, Tiptoe Through the Tulips, which was sung in his distinctive high falsetto/vibrato voice. On 17 December 1969, he married Victoria Mae Budinger on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show - a publicity stunt that attracted almost 40 million viewers. They produced a daughter, Tulip Victoria. Following is the wedding, his biggest hit, and his performance at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, in front of a crowd of 600,000 people.
1960 - PAUL McCartney and Pete Best were deported from West Germany after being arrested on suspicion of arson, 51 years ago today, after the hotel room they were staying in mysteriously caught fire. Next day the pair was released, then deported. Same day three years later, in 1963, I Want To Hold Your Hand by The Beatles was released in their home country. For the first time ever (in the UK) advanced orders passed the million mark before a record was released. This is a rarely seen video of live TV performance.
1965 - MID-SIXTIES, and despite the fact that rock'n'roll and its new exponents, Beatles, Rolling Stones et al were now seemingly dominating world music popularity, in reality musical soundtracks from movies and the stage were holding their own, viz, following are top five albums around the world on this day in '65: #5, Out Of Our Heads, The Rolling Stones; #4, Highway 61 Revisited, Bob Dylan; #3, Help!, The Beatles; #2, Mary Poppins Soundtrack; #1, Sound Of Music Soundtrack. 1965 - COLORADO Governor John A. Love declared a Rolling Stones day throughout the State as The Stones appeared at The Denver Collisseum in Colorado during a North American tour. Times change rapidly, and none more obvious than music styles, and just six years after the Stones were wooed by officialdom, and back in their home country, as former skinhead band, Slade, from Wolerhampton, rose to the fore during the glam rock era of the early 1970s. With 17 consecutive Top 20 hits and six # ones, Slade dominated UK charts during the early 1970s, out-performing chart rivals, such as Wizzard, Sweet, T. Rex, Suzi Quatro, Mud, Smokie, Gary Glitter, Roxy Music. The band spent a total of 531 weeks in the UK charts during their career, and have influenced bands such as Kiss, Mötley Crüe, Hanoi Rocks, Queen, Quiet Riot, Poison, Def Leppard, Condo Fucks, Oasis, Kirka, Cheap Trick, Hot Leg, Twisted Sister, and The Runaways. On this day 49 years ago, Slade were #1, with Coz I Love You.
1976 - LANCASTER local council cancelled the Sex Pistols gig at Lancaster Poly, England, today, releasing the following statement justifying the cancellation: We don't want that sort of filth (The Sex Pistols) in the town limits." Four years later, 1980, on the same day, Abba scored their ninth and last #1 single, with Super Trouper, the group's 25th Top 40 hit in the UK. The name Super Trouper referred to the gigantic spotlights used in stadium concerts.
1980 - DOUBLE Fantasy is the album released by John Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, today in 1980. Some critics bitterly cut the album to shreds when it was released, and it had only been released for three weeks, when Lennon was brutally murdered outside his home. The album went on to become a worldwide commercial success, and went on to win the 1981 Album of the Year at the 24th Annual Grammy Awards. The album was a creeper, needing time to become accustomed to the sound and the songs, and I think it would have been successful without Lennon's death. But no doubt, his assassination added to sales. For me, it is iconic for its music and where it came from, and the honesty of the lyrics. This is one of the songs, and it says a lot about Lennon's relationship with himself.
1997 - WHITNEY Houston pulled out of a concert sponsored by the Moonies two hours before she was due on stage after finding out the event was a mass wedding for 1,000 Moonie couples. The religious group said they had no intention of suing, providing the singer returned the $1m fee she had received. Did she return it? Who knows? Same day in 1997, and Celine Dion had a worldwide hit with Let's Talk About Love; also on the same day, same year, Lou Reed's song, Perfect Day was performed and recorded by 29 various artists including Elton John, Bono, Tom Jones, David Bowie, Dr. John and much more. The song was a fund raiser for the BBC Children In Need charity, and it topped the UK singles chart. Perfect Day was first written and recorded in 1973 by Lou Reed. Beautiful song, beautiful version, beautiful video.
1999 - CURTIS Knight, the American singer and bandleader died, today, aged 54. Jimi Hendrix had been a member of his band during the 60s, and though Hendrix wasn't in the group for very long, he was featured on about 26 studio, and 35 live recordings, not all of which have been released. This is one such recording. The music is Knight & unmistakable Hendrix, the visuals are of a crowd lapping it up.
2003 - A five-hour charity show to boost the fight against Aids was held at the Greenpoint Stadium in Cape Town, today. The show was broadcast live across the internet, and featured Bono, Queen, Peter Gabriel, Eurythmics, Beyonce, Youssou N'Dour, Anastacia, The Corrs, Jimmy Cliff and one of my faces, from London, Ms Dynamite.
