Dear Reader,
Friday March 23, and we go from the Pope to pop, to classical, to new wave and back again.
* Pope John Paul II had a dabble in pop music 13 years ago today when he released his debut album.
* Psychedelic Furs show us their pretty pink wares in 1980.
* Elvis at #1 with an old German folk song as he records a new hit with an old Italian folk song in 1960.
* Adam and the Ants show a new style of rock'n'roll new music, 31 years ago.
* It's 1963 and the Beach Boys look very...er...dapper performing this hit.
* We go way back to two John Lennon events; his marriage to Yoko Ono, shown here by Australian TV pop show host, Dick Williams, and the release of Lennon's book, In His Own Write.
* Former Creedence Clearwater Revival singer, John Fogerty shows us his solo style in 1985, on this day.
* We go classical once again with a debut of one of Haydn's pieces.
* And classical again, this time with the debut of Handel's Messiah in 1743.

November 26, 1991 - DURING a British tour, grunge forerunners, Nirvana, appeared at Bradford University, England, and on the same day in 1994, The Eagles had a world hit with their album, Hell Freezes Over. Four years later, and Brit-pop began its relentless run around the world, spearheaded by Oasis and Blur. Tonight in 1995, Blur appeared at Sheffield Arena, England, with tickets costing just GBP £14.00. This was Blur's breakthrough song, and still stands up today.


1956 - BIG band leader and jazz trombone soloist Tommy Dorsey died today. Dorsey was also trumpeter, composer, and leading bandleader of the Big Band era. Known as 'The Sentimental Gentleman of Swing', he was the younger brother of bandleader Jimmy Dorsey, and after the brothers split as a double act in the mid-30s, he led an extremely popular and highly successful band from the late 1930s into the 1950s. He remains a famous big bandleader of the swing era into the twenty first century. This is one of his signature songs, written by arranger Sy Oliver.


1958 - JOHNNY Cash, made his debut on the US country chart today when his song Cry! Cry! Cry! made it to number 14, paving the way for his next seven singles which would all make the country top 10, with this song hitting the top spot.


1962 - THIS is the day the Beatles recorded their second single, Please Please Me, but it took18 takes, and on the same day five years later, the 1967 promotional film of the Beatles' song, Hello, Goodbye was aired on The Ed Sullivan show. It was never shown at the time in the UK due to a musician's union ban on miming.


1967 - TIMES have changed: during a UK tour Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Move, Nice and Amen Corner all appeared at The Palace Theatre in Manchester, playing two shows in one evening. A year later on the same day, and supergroup Cream played their farewell concert at the Royal Albert Hall, London. Also on the bill were Yes and Taste.



1975 - DURING a UK tour the great Captain Beefheart appeared live at Brunel University, Middlesex, England, tickets costing just GBP £1.20, and on the same day, same year Slade, Gary Glitter, Leo Sayer and The Troggs all appeared live on UK TV pop show Supersonic. A year later on the same day, and Kevin Godley & Lol Creme left 10cc to work as a duo and concentrate on other projects including developing The Gizmo, a device used to make neo- orchestral sounds on a guitar. This was 10cc's first big hit, and one of the first of the creative video music promos.


1976 - SEX Pistols released the song Anarchy In The UK today, the tune peaking at #38 on the UK charts. A year later, and new wave band, Blondie played the first night of their 28-date debut tour of Australia, at the Concert Hall in Perth. Following, is vintage Blondie footage before their star began to rise, the first one being their unique version of Goldfinger, the second, black and white and live from New York's CBGB's, circs '75/'76
