November 22, 1997 - INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence was found dead in his hotel room in the Ritz Carlton hotel in Double Bay, Australia, today. He was 37 years old. His body was found at 11.50am, naked, behind the door to his room. One theory is that he hanged himself with his own belt and the buckle broke away, his body found kneeling on the floor, facing the door. It has since been suggested that his death resulted from an act of auto eroticism but no forensic or other evidence to substantiate that suggestion has been found found. Two years prior to his death, in the throes of multi-addiction and multi-emotional trauma, Hutchence began work on what would become his posthumous solo album in 1995. Following his death in 1997, Black Grape producer Danny Saber and ex-Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill completed the album. U2 singer, and Hutchence's friend, Bono recorded lyrics which were added to the track Slide Away. In my view, the Hutchence solo album is one of the greatest ever albums from an Australian solo artist. Hutchence nailed the personal moment in music, emotion and lyric, and with the combined talent and clear, but inevitably difficult direction from Saber and Gill, produced a stunning album that has so far been ignored by all and sundry, critics and fans. For me it is soulfully rich and mystical, a clear statement of life's drug-addled dilemma that eventually took him down, no matter the circumstances by which his demise occurred. This is a song written by Hutchence and Gill, with an unofficial video produced by Lobo Producciones, Mendoza, Argentina. Following that is a the official first single from the album, Straight line; a live shaky bootleg tape of Bono and Edge's tribute song, live from the David Letterman show; finally, the solo song Rooms From The Memory, performed by Hutchence and Max Q, in the movie Dogs In Space. If you want to discover Michael Hutchence and his own music, this is a must-have collection of solid beefy music.

1938 - CLASSIC blues tune Jelly Roll Blues was composed 73 years ago today by Bunny Berigan, an American jazz trumpeter. He rose to fame during the swing era, but his virtuosity and influence shortened by a losing battle with alcoholism that ended in his early death, at 33. He composed jazz instrumentals Chicken and Waffles and Blues in 1935. His 1937 classic jazz recording I Can't Get Started was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1975.

1957 - PAUL Simon and Art Garfunkel appeared on TV show American Bandstand today, billed as Tom and Jerry. Same day and year, Miles Davis and his quintet debuted with a jazz concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Here is the man with one of his best pieces, Around Midnight. This is he with his second great quintet, 10 years after his premiere, in Stockholm, Sweden. The quintet had essentially abandoned traditional chord-change-based bop and their music was becoming increasingly complex, abstract and free, as Davis moved closer to his electric "fusion" period. The personnel was Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams.

1965 - BOB Dylan married his sweetheart, Sarah Lowndes, today, as
the stage musical, Man of La Mancha, began today. The musical ran for 2,328 performances. Peter O'Toole, Sophia Loren and James Coco starred in the movie version of the musical, so here's O'Toole and Loren in a scene from the movie.

1967 - SONS and daughters of famous singers/actors mostly have a tough time of it trying to forge their own identity, and Woody Guthrie's son, Arlo was no exception. This was the quirky song Arlo released today, and it has since become iconic for the underrated former folk singer. They even based a movie on the quirky song. This is Arlo Guthrie 44 years ago, in a clip from his movie.

1968 - THE Beatles released their double album called The Beatles, but commonly known as the White Album, 43 years ago. One of the great songs on this album was, Revolution, recorded in June of the same year at the start of the White Album sessions. The double White album featured some great songs that turned into classic in time; Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Dear Prudence, Helter Skelter, Blackbird, Back In The USSR and George Harrisons While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Priced at GBP£3.13 shillings, it was at the top of world charts for months.

1975 - SCOTTISH comedian Billy Connolly was at #1 on the UK singles charts today with a parody of Dolly Parton's song D.I.V.O.R.C.E. At the same time, KC and the Sunshine Band started a run around the world at top chart spots with That's The Way (I Like It), the group's second world hit. Remember this?
