Dear Reader,
Friday March 23, and we go from the Pope to pop, to classical, to new wave and back again.

* Psychedelic Furs show us their pretty pink wares in 1980.
* Elvis at #1 with an old German folk song as he records a new hit with an old Italian folk song in 1960.
* Adam and the Ants show a new style of rock'n'roll new music, 31 years ago.
* It's 1963 and the Beach Boys look very...er...dapper performing this hit.
* We go way back to two John Lennon events; his marriage to Yoko Ono, shown here by Australian TV pop show host, Dick Williams, and the release of Lennon's book, In His Own Write.
* Former Creedence Clearwater Revival singer, John Fogerty shows us his solo style in 1985, on this day.
* We go classical once again with a debut of one of Haydn's pieces.

October 5, 1998 - AMERICAN independent cable channel, HBO, premiered Janet Jackson's new video for Every Time tonight, something a little unusual at the time. The five-time Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter has been credited for inspiring a new generation of superstars, from Usher, Beyoncé, Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez to Lady Gaga and many more. The Rhythm Nation singer is just so gorgeous, so is the song, and the video too!!!

1930 - It's 1930, October 5, and the communication airwaves revolution, still going today, took another step forward when The New York Philharmonic Orchestra was heard over CBS radio from Carnegie Hall, a broadcasting first. Nine years later and future crooner, Perry Como, recorded the now-classic song, I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now, for Decca Records, under the guidance of the Ted Weems Orchestra. There is no video, so how about this early fifties version from his mate, another crooner, the legendary Dean Martin. For more Deano ids and facts, go to our archive search engine.

1962 - Just 22 years later, and the entire music industry was thrown on its ear when it all changed forever when a brand new band from Liverpool, England, recorded this, their very first song.

1968 - Of course there were many supergroups during the 30s, 40s, and 50s, mostly in jazz and the big band eras, but the first ever rock'n'roll supergroup, without doubt, was Cream, who released White Room, today, the day they began their farewell tour of the U.S. This is their London farewell concert on November 11, 1968, introduced here by legendary British DJ, the late John Peel.

1968 - Steppenwolf are a Canadian-American rock group formed in 1967 in Los Angeles by vocalist John Kay, guitarist Michael Monarch, bassist Rushton Moreve, keyboardist Goldy McJohn and drummer Jerry Edmonton. The band has sold more than 24 million records worldwide, with eight gold albums and 12  Billboard Hot 100 singles of which six were Top 40 hits, with three top 10s: Born to Be Wild, Magic Carpet Ride, and Rock Me. The band's peak years of success were '68 to 1974. Charismatic front man, John Kay is the only original member left. This is one of the underrated rock groups, and this is their Magic Carpet Ride.

1969 - At the end of the sixties, the suits in power at television stations realised they would have to air rock'n'roll bands - whether or not the suits wanted to. This was a big risk at the time, with bands such as the Who, simple - in their case - because of the unpredictable madness of drummer Keith Moon. The group was young, brash, with Moon a wild card. Here's the band 42 years ago today, appearing live on the Smothers Brothers TV show.

1974 - This is the night that Randy Newman performed with an 87-piece symphony at the Atlanta Symphony Hall, but for some reason there is no filmed footage of the event. A year later, though, the grand man of lyric genius and musical originality did the same thing with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, and this is the result, this song being the caustic Redneck.

1975 - A cautionary tale about fathers not spending enough time with their children, Cat's in the Cradle was released by Harry Chapin today, and it went straight to #1 in most places around the world. The folk rock song was taken from Chapin's album, Verities & Balderdash, and  has since become a staple in most folkies' repertoires. Chapin says the song was about his father-son relationship with his son, Josh, saying: "Frankly, this song scares me to death.

1998 - This is the day, just 13 years ago when the American Supreme Court refused to throw out a suit that alleged Andrew Lloyd Webber had copied the Phantom Song from song Till You, by Ray Repp. Webber eventually won the case. the movie of the Phantom musical was given a universal bad rap around the world, but I loved it, as I loved the stage musical. What about you?

2001 - Exactly a decade ago, Michael Jackson gave a 30-year career anniversary concert at Madison Square Garden, New York, which turned out to be his final concert. Jackson has always had his detractors, but he changed aspects of show business, and was a massive influence on stage production, along with an inspiring and massive force on the the integration of soul music, funk music, and pop and rock music. This performance features Usher and Chris Tucker. Jackson remains remarkable icon that helped shaped a generation, R.I.P Michael Jackson!
