October 26, 1979 - AC/DC appeared at The Mayfair, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England, tonight, supported by Def Leppard. The bands were booked to appear the night before but after a minor fire at the venue in the afternoon, that night's show was cancelled, taking place the following evening…32 years ago tonight. Most hardcore AC/DC fans would've, perhaps, seen this backstage, off-guard footage, but for those who haven't seen it…here it is, all ten minutes of it!
1935 - THE Shell Chateau Hour was a musical variety radio series heard on Americas's NBC from 1935, and on the show that aired October 26, 1935, 12-year-old Judy Garland gave her very first radio appearance. The old-time radio host Wallace Beery introduced her on his radio show on NBC. Ms. Garland has the most amazing voice at 12yo, with a clear sign of things to come - gem vintage broadcast.
1959 - THIS is a video of the very young Everley Brothers, as the host declares, aged 18 and 20, with their big hit, Bye Bye Love. This was their huge hit at the time, and they surprisingly chose this day to publicly announce they were considering leaving their record label.
1965 - BRITAIN'S Queen Elizabeth II invested the Beatles with their MBE awards at Buckingham Palace, London, 46 years ago today. According to a rocklore account by John Lennon, the group smoked marijuana in one of the palace bathrooms to calm their nerves. Because the mop tops were receiving the MBEs, many former recipients gave theirs back in protest, to which John Lennon responded: "Lots of people who complained about us receiving the MBE received theirs for heroism in the war, for killing people. We received ours for entertaining other people. I'd say we deserve ours more." When asked how he enjoyed meeting Queen Elizabeth II, lennon declared, "she's much nicer than she is in the photos."
1975 - ONE of the best dance sequences from one of the best openers from one of the best musicals of all time, is this one, from A Chorus Line - the opening number of the 2007 Tony Awards, featuring the 2007 Broadway revival cast of A Chorus Line. And this was the day the original musical had its debut.
1981 - DAVID Bowie and Freddie Mercury feature together in this video montage, but it's not real, only in video-form. The song itself was recorded exactly 30 years ago today, in Montreaux, Switzerland. Here in the vid, Bowie's images are from the studio and the Mercury tribute show, Freddie's images are from a Queen concert at Wembley Stadium.
1998 - IT is only 12 years since the combined global recording industry, as represented by the Recording Industry Association of America, demonstrated clearly that it had completely lost the plot when it unsuccessfully took out an injunction against the downloading and sale of MP3 downloaded digital music. The U.S. federal judge ruling the case refused to issue an injunction against the sale of the new digital music players. The device was used to play music downloaded from the internet. The industry really thought it could control what we use to play our music, and even how we download it. As time has shown, the industry was very, very wrong. Methinks they have finally realised, 13 years later, that music is no longer their right to own and exploit.
1998 - HERE is an interview with Marilyn Manson in 1998, coinciding with the start of his Mechanical Animals tour, in Kansas City, which began today. Mechanical Animals was the third full-length studio album by American rock band Marilyn Manson, released on September 14, 1998, in Australia and on September 15, 1998, in the US, Germany and France. It purports to be a rock opera concept album and the second instalment in a trilogy that includes Antichrist Superstar and Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death). Go Mazza.
