October 20, 1960 - ROY Orbison had his first worldwide #1 single with Only The Lonely 51 years ago today, the first of 33 hits. The song was turned down by The Everly Brothers and Elvis Presley, so, seeing he wrote it, Orbison decided to record it himself. This is the original vid, the only music video showing Orbison without his trademark prescription glasses.
1954 - THIS is the official, original version of America's #1 Original Broadway Musical, Peter Pan, starring Tony Award Winners, Mary Martin as Peter, and Cyril Ritchard in a dual role as the dastardly Captain Hook and the more benign Mr. George Darling. It first opened on October 20th, 1954...that's today!!! This is a rip from the original movie of the stage musical. My how times can change in just haf a century.
1955 - I can remember hearing this song when I was almost a teenager, aged 11, and it blew me away. When I first heard the tune, it was my first exposure to any kind of Jamaican music. This is the day Harry Belafonte released The Banana Boat Song. Great voice, great lyric, great song, great looker. So…here's the man, sharing the song with the Muppets.
1960 - AFTER being called up to serve in Germany with the US army, Elvis Presley filmed G.I. Blues, and it premiered today...50 years ago. The movie is a musical motion picture played as a romantic comedy, and filmed filmed at Paramount's Hollywood studios, with some pre-production scenery shot on location in Germany before Presley's release from the army. The best part of the movie for me, was the amazing dancing by the ultra sensual Juliet Prowse. If you go to our archive and type in her name, you'll see what I mean. Hot and sexy!
1961 - THIS was the day when Bob Dylan's self-titled debut album was recorded, and to celebrate here's a bootleg audio, along with some great pix, from the same year, 1961. The song is an old Woody Guthrie folk song, Ramblin Round, supposedly recorded in Bonnie Beecher's apartment, and lifted from the bootleg tape, Songs For Bonnie.
1962 - I can clearly remember this song, me aged 15, Big Girls Don't Cry, by the Four Seasons, and it was released today in 1962. One mike, four singers, live...can't do much better than that. This song stood out from other songs you could here on the radio at the time. They had some brilliant songs, the Four Seasons.
1962 - IRVING Berlin's musical, Mr. President, opened on Broadway today, and if you go to our archive search engine you will find a video plus much more on the great Irving Berlin. On the same day in 1969, following his flirtation with heroin addiction, John Lennon released Cold Turkey, his second solo single. He reportedly offered it to the Beatles, but they knocked it back. To view the video, go to our archive search engine. just four years after Turkey, on this day in 1973, Sydney's iconic Opera House was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II. Rather than go for archive footage, here is some free-form amateur 8mm footage taken from the harbour on the very day of the event.
1973 - STEVE Miller remains one of the understated singer/songwriter/guitar players of the seventies, and his iconic song, The Joker, released today, exactly 38 years ago today. It contains the great line: "Really love your peaches, wanna shake your tree", and one of the best descriptions of a pot smoker, "midnight toker." And just to show that some acts get better with age, here he is, in October of last year, live on Jools Holland Later.
1976 - I know Zep fans are ferociously loyal, but were Led Zeppelin really the greatest band in the world? Or simply a great, loud blues band. Whatever the case, their standing in rock music history remains near the upper echelons of the totem pole, and this was the day their movie The Song Remains The Same premiered in London.
1980 - FOR me, U2's first video and song, I Will Follow, was a refreshing new sound 31 years ago, what do you think? This was the day their first album, Boy, was released, and I ask you, are you old enough to remember this video?
1992 - SOME of you are clever little vegemites, like youtuber stulancs, who created this little gem, a remix of Madonna's Erotica, released today almost 20 years ago on this very day. What do you think? Better than the original official video?
