November 1, 1964 - THE Dave Clarke Five appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show 18 times, more than any other rock act, and at one stage had a multitude of hit songs on the charts. Their single Glad All Over knocked the Beatles' I Want To Hold Your Hand from top spot on the charts. The Dave Clarke Five were the second group (after the Beatles) of the so-called British Invasion, to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show. The group disbanded in late 1970, and on March 10, 2008 the band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This is the day the group appeared for the very first time on Sullivan's show.
1968 - STARRING the gorgeously beautiful Jane Birkin, sixties psychedelic movie Wonderwall was released this year, and George Harrison released the soundtrack today. He was the first Beatle to release a solo album, and following is the trailer for the Wonderwall movie.
1969 - WHEN Steve Marriott left the Small Faces in 1969, the three remaining members brought in guitarist Ron Wood and lead singer Rod Stewart to complete the lineup and changed their name to the Faces, which was only appropriate since the group now only slightly resembled the mod-pop group of the past. Instead, the Faces were a rough, sloppy rock & roll band, able to pound out a rocker like Had Me a Real Good Time, or a folk number like Richmond all in one album. Notorious for their hard-partying, boozy tours and ragged concerts, the Faces lived the rock & roll lifestyle to the extreme. When Stewart's solo career became more successful than the Faces, the band slowly became subservient to his personality; after their final studio album, Ooh La La, in 1973, Ronnie Lane left the band. After a tour in 1974, the band called it quits; Wood joined the Rolling Stones, drummer Kenny Jones eventually became part of the Who, and keyboardist Ian McLaglan became a sought-after supporting musician; Stewart became a superstar, although he never matched the simple charm of the Faces. And why is this relevant to today? Because the Faces were added to Warner Brothers records today. Ronnie Lane takes lead vocals on this classic Faces song. Stewart pretends to play bass. Lane was a one-off, for sure.
1970 - MATHEWS Southern Comfort were at #1 on the UK singles chart with their version of the Joni Mitchell song Woodstock, today, the group's only UK #1 hit. If you'd prefer Joni Mitchell's version, go to our archive search engine.
1975 - TOURING Australia for the first time, Paul McCartney's post-Beatles group, Wings, kicked off an 11-date tour at The Entertainment Centre in Perth, tonight. Just for something different, how about this hilarious interview from the press conference, as conducted by comedian, Norman Gunston. I was at this conference, and this is an edited version. Our reader outside Australia may be a little puzzled wityh Gunston, but go with the flow.
1991 - THIS is one of the songs on the Nirvana album, MTV Unplugged, in New York. The song is a classic, written by Leadbelly, Where Did You Sleep Last Night, and many of today's rock acts have done a version of this song, including this one from Kurt Cobain and his band.
1993 - FATS Domino's first major album release in almost 25 years occurred today, his Christmas Is a Special Day album, released almost 40 years after he had a worldwide hit with this song.
