September 27, 1938 - AMERICAN jazz clarinetist, composer, and bandleader, Artie Shaw was certainly a strange character who lived a full 95-year life. Playing clarinet at 13, he left home and joined a touring band at 16, becoming a session musician and leading band leader during the thirties. Shaw first gained critical acclaim with his song, Interlude In B-flat, then came the swing era and his universal hit versions of Cole Porter's Begin The Beguine and Stardust. Widely regarded as "one of jazz's finest clarinetists," Shaw flirted with be-bop in the mid fifties before retiring from music. He acted in movies, had his own radio show, and wrote fiction: Snow White in Harlem, I Love You, I Hate You, Drop Dead, and his 1000-page autobiographical novel, The Education of Albie Snow. Artie Shaw was married eight times. And on this day, he recorded the following song, Nightmare, and if you're a Martin Scorsese fan, you would've hear it in one of his movies.
1938 - Like many entertainers, comedian Bob Hope had his own signature tune, Thanks for the Memory, composed by Ralph Rainger and Leo Robin. It was heard for the first time in this scene with Shirley Ross, from the movie The Big Broadcast Of 1938.
1942 - Speaking of big band heroes, Glenn Miller and his Orchestra performed together for the last time, 69 years ago today. Miller had volunteered for the american army, fighting in World War Two. the music legend disappeared, presumed dead, on December 15, 1944, while flying over the English Channel on his way to entertain the troops. Following is one of my favourite songs, one of Miller's signature tunes.
1964 - Unbelievable, but today marks the 47th year since the Beach Boys appeared for the first time on American variety television variety programme, the Ed Sullivan Show. Same year, live concert, different song - how about They performed I Get Around. Well...no, not quite. How about Little Deuce Coupe?
1972 - Prior to joining the Beatles, drummer Ringo Starr supplied the beat for Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. Sadly, today was the day poor old Rory committed left the planet, in what appeared to be a suicide pact with his mother. This video was recorded at Liverpool's the Cavern, a month after Ringo resigned to join the Beatles.
1973 - Rolling Stone magazine reported that Carlos Santana had changed his name to Devadip, today, now a disciple of Sri Chinmoy, Indian spiritual teaher, musician, & artist. Six years later on the same day, and Elton John collapsed onstage while performing Better Off Dead at the Universal Amphitheatre, and on that same day, same year, Blondie released their Eat To The Beat LP, and this is the original video.
1979 - By 1979, new wave trio the Police released their second album, Regatta de Blanc. This is Can't Stop Losing you, filmed during the band's debut American tour.
