1964 - At the end of the North American tour The Beatles played a Charity concert at the Paramount Theatre in New York City, where the 3,682 audience members paid $100 a ticket. One the very same day, five years later, during a meeting in London between John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Lennon announced he was leaving The Beatles. Following are two pieces of video, the first edited audio grabs from Lennon explaining why the Beatles broke up, and then a short six minute doco on the event.
1969 - This was the day that supergroup Blind Faith started a two-week run at #1 on the UK music chart with their self-titled debut album, which then reached top of the charts in other countries around the world. The one-off release from the Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker & Rick Grech line-up was promoted with a one-off only UK gig in Hyde Park, London, on 7th June, 1969.
1969 - We are still in 1969, 42 years ago, still the same day, and British music paper, Melody Maker, published their readers' poll results for most popular musicians and bands, and winners included Eric Clapton who won best musician, Bob Dylan best male singer, and best album for Nashville Skyline. Best group went to The Beatles, Best single went to Simon and Garfunkel for The Boxer, and readers voted in Janis Joplin as the best female singer. Sit back, watch and listen top the immortal Janis. She remains unique. RIP. For more Janis, go to our search engine & archives.
1970 - The Rolling Stones live album Get Your Ya-Yas Out, recorded at New York's Madison Sq Gardens on 27th & 28th Nov 1969, went to #1 around the world, today. This is a song about the gin-soaked bar room queen in Memphis.
1970 - Jim Morrison of The Doors was acquitted on charges of lewd and lascivious behavior, today, but found guilty of exposing himself during a concert. He died nine months later. Two years later, Paul and Linda McCartney were arrested for the second time in four weeks for possession of cannabis this time at their Scottish farmhouse in Campbeltown. A year later, on September 20, tragedy struck when singer/songwriter, Jim Croce died with five others in a chartered aircraft crash in Louisiana, USA. My fave song of Jim's - I Have To Say I Love You In A Song wasn't available, but here are two of his best.
1975 - It's ironic, that David Bowie's first American #1 hit was co-written by John Lennon, and if you want to view the song named Fame, go to our archive search engine. While it was at the top, a new kid in town, Bruce Springsteen released Born To Run, which you can also view by going to our archive. Number one album around the world today was singer songwriter, Janis Ian. Used to love Janis, what about you? Do you remember this? Sad.
1980 - Fast forward to September 20, 1980 and Britain's Kate Bush scored her first UK #1 album with Never For Ever, the first album by a British female solo artist to top the UK album chart, and the first album by any female solo artist to enter the chart at #1. Are you ready for Kate, appearing here on German television? Following that a quaint interview with the girl - remember this is 31 years old.
1995 - London's fish'n'chip wrapping paper, The Daily Mirror, ran a front page story calling for a ban on the 'sick stunt' that was the new single from Pulp's song, Sorted For Es & Wizz. The artwork showed how to fold a speed wrap, the sleeve was changed, and the single entered the UK chart at #8. And this is their performance of the song on Top of The Pops.
