October 1, 1970 - ONE of the all-time greats of soul & funk music is Curtis Mayfield, who left the Impressions today, in search of a solo career. The American soul, R&B, and funk singer, songwriter, and record producer, best known for his anthemic music with The Impressions and for composing the soundtrack to the blaxploitation film Super Fly, was a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, bass, piano, saxophone, and drums. Curtis Mayfield won the Grammy Legend Award in 1994, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in the following year, and was a double inductee into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; inducted as a member of The Impressions into Hall of Fame in 1991, and again in 1999 as a solo artist. He is also a two-time Grammy Hall of Fame inductee.
1928 - WITH the great Louie Bellson on drums, Duke Ellington recorded The Mooche today, adding to his enormous body of work. The Duke was an American composer, pianist, and big band leader, who wrote more than 1,000 compositions during his 50-year-spanning career. In the words of Bob Blumenthal of The Boston Globe; "In the century since his birth, there has been no greater composer, American or otherwise, than Edward Kennedy Ellington." The jazz musician's music jazz stretched into various other genres, including blues, gospel, film scores, popular, and classical.

They would become known simply as The Band. Two years later, on the same day, & Pink Floyd arrived in New York to begin their first U.S. tour. One of the acts supported by the pirate radio stations was Jimi Hendrix, who was buried today in 1970, in Seattle, USA. One Trick Pony, the semi-autobiographical film of Paul Simon, is an absolutely brilliant movie, and this a great scene from it. But two decades ago today, there was the auction of the bejewelled white glove, supposedly tossed by Michael Jackson to an Australian fan sold at auction for more than $48,000, almost twice the estimated selling price.
