Dear Reader,
Friday March 23, and we go from the Pope to pop, to classical, to new wave and back again.
* Pope John Paul II had a dabble in pop music 13 years ago today when he released his debut album.
* Psychedelic Furs show us their pretty pink wares in 1980.
* Elvis at #1 with an old German folk song as he records a new hit with an old Italian folk song in 1960.
* Adam and the Ants show a new style of rock'n'roll new music, 31 years ago.
* It's 1963 and the Beach Boys look very...er...dapper performing this hit.
* We go way back to two John Lennon events; his marriage to Yoko Ono, shown here by Australian TV pop show host, Dick Williams, and the release of Lennon's book, In His Own Write.
* Former Creedence Clearwater Revival singer, John Fogerty shows us his solo style in 1985, on this day.
* We go classical once again with a debut of one of Haydn's pieces.
* And classical again, this time with the debut of Handel's Messiah in 1743.

1960 - This was the day Chubby Checker performed The Twist on television for the first time on American Bandstand. So from 51 years ago, here is the original Twist clip, from the original artist, followed by a recent mash-up of a version with Beyonce and crew.

1964 - There once was a tele show in the UK called The Beat Room, and a very young Rod Stewart made his TV debut on the show today, so the old Rodders' has been around awhile now. This is not from that show, but it is a clip of Stewart singing live in the same year, and sounding very much like Australia's late Billy Thorpe. For more information and videos on Rod Stewart, go to our archive search engine.

1970 - This was the day one of the very first anti-war super concert was held at Shea Stadium in New York. The show featured Janis Joplin, Paul Simon, Steppenwolf and Johnny Winters. A year later on the same day, and Procul Harum recorded a concert with the Edmonton Symphony in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Portions would later be released as the album Live with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. It does not appear they recored that show, sadly, so instead, from the same year, we give you the band performing this little ditty, live. If you want to see their big hit, Whiter Shade Of Pale, go to our archive search engine.

1981 - Stevie Nicks released her debut solo album, Bella Donna, today, and two years later at the famous US Festival, she performed Gypsy/Angel from the album. Also on the same bill - years befoire their biggest hit, I Touch Myself, the Divinyls performed this blistering song, their first big American live appearance. How good were the Divinyls? How good was Chrissy Amphlett? For me, she remains the best and most real deal femme rocker of my generation.

1982 - Pink Floyd's The Wall had its world premiere in New York City, today and if you want to see videos of Pink Floyd and the wall, go to our archive search engine; similarly with the Beastie Boys, who sued the city of Jacksonville, Florida, today, for including the two words "mature audience" on their concert tickets and promo advertisements. Why they did that, only they know! And in 1987 on the same day - now 24 years ago - I remember being blown away with this Madonna movie, which had its premiere in Manhattan…Here's the movie trailer. Not man people liked the movie, and it was panned by critics, but I thought it was fun. Maybe it was my state of mind back then.

1989 - Speaking of smoking something, this was the day in 1989 when U2's Adam Clayton was arrested at his home in Dublin, Ireland, for marijuana possession. Tsk, tsk Adam - clearly you never watched this film. Had you watched this education film, Adam, you would never have wandered down that evil road.

1995 - As soul music became totally mainstream, American television show Soul Train presented its debut Lady of Soul Awards, and accordingly, dear reader, we go back 16 years to witness Whitney Houston as she presents an award to her beautiful and talented mother, Cissy.

1996 - Big-noting ego on legs, Vince Neil, attempted to play a show at an Indiana club with his band, on this day, the show, starting more than four hours late, and ending after only three songs. Neil claimed that he wasn't feeling well, and that the audience of 'rednecks, as he dubbed them,  didn't appreciate his talent. Same day, same year, and a much more important event took place in Hollywood when Eddie Vedder videotaped the Ramones placing their hands in cement on the Hollywood Rock Walk, prior to the legendary band's show at the famous Palace Theatre. The Ramones claimed that it was their last show ever. And it was. And so, watch their final show, 06.08.96 - Gabba Gabba Hey!

2000 - Can you believe it's a decade since this little Robbie Williams dirty ditty went to #1 around the world...you think it holds up? It caused controversy at the time, and was banned from many TV stations around the planet. I quite like the girls in this video, though...yep, no doubt about it, what do you think?
