1922 - The New Orleans Rhythm Kings recorded Tiger Rag, today, and this early recording on Gennett 51 label ensured their position as one of the most influential jazz bands of the early-to-mid 1920s. The band was a combination of New Orleans and Chicago musicians who helped shape Chicago Jazz and influenced many younger jazz musicians at the time. There are no videos of the band, but this is a compilation with stills of twenties girls of the day.
1968 - This was the day the Beatles released their song, Hey Jude, a song credited to Lennon and McCartney, evolving from its original title, Hey Jules. The song was actually penned by Paul to comfort John Lennon's son Julian (or his ex-wife, Cynthia, mother of Julian, depending on which story is correct) during his parents' divorce. Hey Jude begins with a classic verse-bridge structure based around McCartney's vocal performance and piano accompaniment, and it slowly builds from there until the long, almost-four-minute fade-out. Hey Jude was released today, as the first single from the Beatles' record label Apple Records. More than seven minutes in length, the song was the longest single ever to top the charts at that time.

1994 - Brit pop band, Oasis released their debut album, Definitely Maybe, today. Live Forever features a basic song structure and lyrics with an optimistic outlook that contrasted with the attitude of the grunge bands popular at the time. The song was the first Oasis single to enter the top ten in the United Kingdom, and garnered critical acclaim. Here's a version from a live concert in Scotland, before the single and album were released.
