1954 - Elvis Presley made one of many early appearances in Memphis, today, where he debuted his record That's All Right (Mama). Some accounts say this was Elvis's first recording, but in fact it was his second, with the B side being Blue Moon Of Kentucky. His first? If you go to our archive search engine you can find out. Give it a whirl!
1959 - Talk about sex, drug and rock'n'roll - fifties and sixties vocal group, The Platters had it all. This is the day the four male members of the multi-hit group were arrested and charged with aiding and abetting prostitution, lewdness and assignation. They were acquitted on December 10, 1959. Sex, drugs and rock'n'roll, eh? And here's their big hit of that year.
1961 - This was the day when sixties songstress Helen Shapiro was at #1 on the UK singles chart with You Don't Know, and, at age 14, she became the youngest British music act ever to score a #1 hit record. Shapiro was born at Bethnal Green Hospital in the East End district of Bethnal Green, London, her early childhood was spent in a Clapton council house in the London borough of Hackney, where she attended Clapton Park Comprehensive School until Christmas 1961. Although too poor to own a record player, Shapiro's parents encouraged music in their home. For a nano second in time, Helen Shapiro was the biggest female star in the UK, and in other parts of the world. Meanwhile, same year, how about another #1 from Ms. Shapiro.
1968 - Were The Who the third part of the British Holy trinity? Who knows, who cares, but 43 years ago today, The Who released the song, Magic Bus. Check out the audience, the band, but in particular, check out Keith Moon.
1970 - It's August 10, 41 years ago, the day Jim Morrison's trial for allegedly exposing himself onstage in Miami, FL, began, and two years laster on the same day, Paul and Linda McCartney were arrested for drug possession after a concert in Gothenburg Sweden. Paul was fined $1,000 and Linda $200. No doubt about the fact that Paul liked his dacka, and I have no doubt still smokes the natural herb. If you want more information on Paul's pot smoking and Morrison's lewd acts, go to our archive search engine. John Denver went to #1 on world charts on this day in 1974, with his album, Back Home Again, and on the same day in the singles charts, Roberta Flack was #1 on the charts for the third time, with Feel Like Making Love. But let's go back to her first ever #1 hit, First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.
1976 - The Americans loved Elton John, and this was the day he performed the first of 10 sold-out nights at Madison Sq. Gardens in New York City. The $1.25m door-take (a lot of money back then) from the shows broke the record set by the Rolling Stones the year before, which was the same year, same day, the Manhattan Transfer summer variety show premiered on CBS-TV in USA. Featuring the second line-up of the group; Tim Hauser with singers Alan Paul, Janis Siegel, and Laurel Massé, Manhattan Transfer developed a cult fan base, with global hit records following.
1985 - This was the day Madonna's Like A Virgin became the first album by a female to be certified for 5 million sales. No doubt, Madonna was a ball-breaker, chart breaker, record breaker, and this was at the start of her illustrious career. And #1 album on the charts, same day and year, was Reckless, from Canadian singer/guitarist Bryan Adams. Do you remember this song?
1995 - Believe it or not, it was 16 years ago when Jimmy Buffett led a birthday celebration for U.S. President Clinton's birthday at the White House. No footage of that, dear reader, but how about from the same year, the remarkably brilliant, and possibly most underrated folk singer of the baby boomer generation at this own free Jimmy Buffet concert.
