1933 - This was the day that USA's most famous early radio broadcasts began in the guise of The Kraft Music Hall. The weekly shows took on the role of variety shows, featuring the acts of the day and top show business entertainers and celebrities of the day. It aired on NBC radio and television from 1933 to 1971. Its debut host was jazz musician, Paul Whiteman, often dubbed 'the king of jazz', in his day. Whiteman could see the coming of the great jazz age of music and accordingly hired the best musicians, but he was prohibited from hiring black performers. Bing Crosby took over as master of ceremonies in 1936 and hosted it until 1946. This short vid is of the man who used to paint his face black, as was the fashion at this time for many performers, and his name was Al Jolson, sans black face paint.

1964 - It's three years short of a half century since the Beatles released their album, A Hard Days Night, which was also the title of the1964 British comedy film written by Alun Owen and starring The Beatles. This was at the very height of Beatlemania. Directed by Richard Lester, the movie was released by United Artists, and made in the style of a mockumentary, describing a couple of days in the lives of the group. It was financially and critically successful, and Tome magazine claimed it was one of the all-time great 100 movies. British critic Leslie Halliwell described it as a "comic fantasia with music; an enormous commercial success with the director trying every cinematic gag in the book", and he awarded it a full four stars. Looking back now there is no doubt the film was a major influence in the genre of spy movies. It also highly influenced The Monkees' television show and the early style of post sixties video pop clips.

1961 - One of my favourite acts of the sixties was Gary U.S. Bonds, a spiritual soul singer her turned his hand to rock'n'roll, like many of them did. He created his own style, and featured a blaring sax in most of his early hits, and he had a few. This was his first, and this was the day that he started a two-week run at #1 on the US charts with 'Quarter To Three. Eventually it became a hit all over the world. Check out the frenetic dancers, especially the one at the end...energy level, 1 million +!!!

1965 - It's the mid-sixties and not everyone was a successful song writer, and one of rock's seminal bands, The Byrds, came into mainstream via a near-perfect cover rendition of the Bob Dylan song, Mr Tambourine Man. If you are old enough, and look closely enough, you'll recognise some members of the band from later - and current - careers. If you are not old enough, you may recognise sun glasses, skinny jeans, jingle jangle guitar sound, and other aspects of the band and their version of the song, that remind you of some bands of today. What do you reckon?

1974 - This was a sad day as the showbiz marriage we'd all gotten used to and loved, that of Sonny and Cher, suddenly was finished. It was the day that Cher divorced Sonny Bono after 10 years of marriage. Just Four days later, Cher married guitarist Gregg Allman, but the couple split 10 days after that, got back together and split again. Eventually the newbies stayed married for three years, producing a child, Elijah Blue Allman. Let's look back at the acid tongue of Cher, and the ego of Sonny, jut two and a half years prior to their split and get a flavour of who they were and what they did best. I doubt Sonny would get away with this today.

1977 - Elvis Presley's final concert took place at Market Square Arena, Indianapolis tonight, way back 34 years ago, today. This is a *MUSICBACKTRACK* bona fide total gold bootleg of ELVIS performing his very last song ever, at his last ever concert before his death on August 16th 1977. It was held at he Market Square Arena, Indianapolis on June 26th 1977, with Elvis wearing the famous white sundial suit. Very, very sad. This footage is authentic bootleg and uploaded to youtube by youtuber classicwax...thanx, for this, dude.

1998 - This is the day that a guy named Stefano Salvati sued Madonna, claiming that her Ray of Light video was stolen from a clip he shot four years earlier for Italian pop star Biagio Antonacci. His action failed. Great clip, and one of Madge's best, for me.

2004 - This was the day when Willie Nelson was joined by Bob Dylan, Keith Richards, Jerry Lee Lewis, Al Green, Kid Rock, Toby Keith and Merle Haggard at Los Angeles’ Wiltern Theatre to tape a concert special for USA Network. This is truly historic footage, despite the appearance of Kid Rock who clearly did not know how to pay homage to the legends with whom he was sharing the stage.

2004 - Same day, same year and Ex-Smiths singer, the acerbic Morrissey kicked off his live solo comeback with the first of five sold-out shows at New York’s Apollo Theatre. His set includes the Smiths songs There is a Light That Never Goes Out and Hand in Glove. Dear reader, this is the fabulous Morrissey. It's a wavering bootleg gem, so forgive the quality and enjoy the moment.

2005 - Although he had enjoyed amazing chart success in America, the late TuPac never made it to the top of the charts in the UK, until seven years after his death, on this day exactly. The rap legend his first UK #1 single with Ghetto Gospel, featuring Elton John. It became one of the most viewed videos on youtube. All well and good, but the powersw that be won't let us use that video - their loss. So let's look at bootleg clip, kindly supplied by youtuber, Bagirek123. This is the original song, featuring Akon. Great song, great video, R.I.P Tupac.
