1882 - He was named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of the century, and this is the day composer Igor Fedorovich Stravinski was born. The Russian composer, pianist, and conductor, is still widely acknowledged as one of the most important and influential composers of 20th century music. Following is a rare gem of a video, where the great Stravinsky conducts his own Firebird - the Lullaby Suite at the age of 82. Massive piece, perfect ending for any piece of music.
1965 - This is the day The Kinks arrived in New York City to start their first U.S. tour. Brothers Ray and Dave Davies formed The Kinks in Muswell Hill, North London, in 1964, and became part of the so-called British music invasion of the world. The Kinks are recognized as one of the most important and influential rock acts of the era, their music influenced by a wide range of genres, including rhythm and blues, British music hall, folk, and country. According to some critics, The Kinks were the first real punk band, and the creators of so-called riff-rock, the foundation of heavy metal riffs.Ray Davies remains one of the best song writers of our era, his social commentary songs second to none. The band first came to prominence in 1964 with their third single, You Really Got Me, written by Ray Davies. This is LIVE, 1964.
1969 - Jazz man Charles Mingus came out of a two-year, self-imposed retirement for a concert appearance at the Village Vanguard in New York City. For Mingus fans, here he is, thumping the bass at Umbria Jazz Festival, Todi, Italy, a few years after his re-emergence. The band is: Charles Mingus (bass), Dannie Richmond (drums), Don Pullen (piano), George Adams (tenor sax), AND Hamiet Bluiett (baritone sax)
1977 - He has the voice of a soul man, one of the best singers in the world today, an absolute killer-diller keyboard player, and guitarist extraordinaire, and it was on this day back in '77 that Steve Winwood released his first solo album, Steve Winwood. By the time he released this album he was a seasoned performer, having been only 15 years old when he co-wrote and recorded this song with The Spencer Davis Group. Can you imagine how he must have felt to have the #1 song in the nation at that age? He handled that pressure better than some superstars. Here's the man with that first hit rush, only when he was a solo performer.
1995 - With one of the best rock voices of the British beat boom of the sixties, Rod Stewart has grown older and settled neatly into middle age, as has his voice, singing better now than ever before. This was the night, 16 years ago, he set an attendance record for Wembley Stadium with a concert crowd of 90,000. Well couldn't find that video, so but howzabout the Diana Tribute Concert at Wembley...two songs, Maggie May and Sailing.
2007 - I loved the Travelling Wilburys when they first emerged, but this was the day, just a few years ago, that the band went straight to #1 on the UK album chart with the 'best of' LP , Collection. The line-up of the Wilburys was: George Harrison, (Nelson Wilbury), Jeff Lynne, (Otis Wilbury), Roy Orbison, (Lefty Wilbury), Tom Petty, (Charlie T. Wilbury Jr.) and Bob Dylan, (Lucky Wilbury). Here's a CNN rundown of the TWs. The album came almost 20 years after their debut.
