1935 - Ella Fitzgerald was just sweet little 17 on this day, 76 years ago, when she recorded this classic jazz, song, Love and Kisses. While we're at it, why not the other song she recorded today, and that was I'll Chase the Blues Away.
1959 - Chuck Berry Is On Top was a compilation album by rock and roll pioneer Chuck Berry, released today in 1959, on Chess Records. The album features of some of his single releases up to that point, including Carol, Maybellene, Johnny B. Goode, Around and Around, and other songs, some of which would be covered by the Beatles and Rolling Stones, and most of which would be become the staple in many new rock groups' repertoires. Some of the session musicians on this album include the then-unknown Bo Diddley, Willie Dixon, Jerome Greene, the Moonglows and many more future rock legends. In a typical American milk bar/cafe scene, here is one of the songs on the album, and one of Berry's best ever.
1959 - One of the session players on Chuck Berry's compilation album released 52 years ago today was Bo Diddley, himself a pioneer of rock'n'roll, creating his own sound and his own rhythm that would be later copied by Buddy Holly, Beatles, Stones and many more. This is the day Bo Diddley released his album, Go Go Bo Diddley, and from that album, here is Hey Bo Diddley, a live version from just five years later. This video demonstrates very clearly and effectively how popular he was at this time in his career; girls screaming, band pumping, Diddley a-jumping.
1965 - The Rolling Stones' (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction was released, and for full details plus a video of the song, and how it came to be, go to our archive search engine. On this same day, same year the Beatles received their MBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) awards. The Beatles were included in the Queen's birthday honours list to each receive the MBE. Protests poured into Buckingham Palace about the pop group receiving such an award, MP Hector Dupuis even stating, "British Royalty has put me on the same level as a bunch of vulgar numbskulls," promptly showing himself to be an out-of-step wowser, and he's never been heard of again. The Beatles were the first entertainers to receive the coveted British Queen's honour.
1965 - Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, in the USA, the Supremes scored their fifth consecutive US #1 single when Back In My Arms Again, went to the top of the charts, on this very same day, and seven years later, John and Yoko released Some Time In New York City, and for details go to our archive search engine. Jump forward to 1976 and the Who, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Little Feat, Outlaws and Streetwalkers all appeared at Swansea City Football Club, Swansea, Wales, with tickets at just GBP4 quid. For more on the Who and Little Feat, go to our archive search engine, but right now let's look at the sensation that was Alex Harvey - without doubt one of the unsung greats of modern rock'n'roll music. This is a song they performed just two days earlier on London Top of the Pops. If you listen to Harvey very closely, and watch him, you will see, probably, the greatest influence on AC/DC's Bon Scott! And that's a fact!
1982 - On this day almost 30 years ago, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt and Gary 'US' Bonds all appeared at a rally for nuclear disarmament in Central Park, New York to over 450,000 fans. Same year, same day and in the United Kingdom, Adam and the Ants were at #1 on the singles chart with Goody Two Shoes, their third and final #1 record. Adam Ant, jut another great Brit music trail-blazer.
1993 - It's June 12, it's a serious 18 years ago, and UB40 had their third UK #1 single with I Can't Help, Falling In Love With You, a #1 hit for Elvis Presley, 31 years earlier. It was a sad day today in 1994, when the jazz great, Cab Calloway, suffered from a stroke. Calloway placed his definitive stamp on music and entertainment, contributing to the elimination of the unspoken all-white colour-code of entertainment from the 20s and 30s in USA. Sadly, Calloway never recovered from the stroke, and died a few months later that year, in November. This was Cab Calloway at his most original, inventive and influential peak, with a song I doubt would be heard on radio today. Cab was the man, no shit.
