1955 - In Bridgeport, Connecticut, a Fats Domino concert was canceled, today, because policed feared a rock 'n' roll riot would occur. Domino first attracted national attention with his song, The Fat Man, in 1949, on Imperial Records. This song is an early rock and roll record, featuring a rolling piano and Domino doing "wah-wah" vocalizing over a strong back beat. It sold over a million copies and is widely regarded as the first rock and roll record to do so.
1967 - This was the night, on the American TV show, The Tonight Show, that founding member, Florence Ballard appeared with the Supremes for the last time. The Supremes performed their 10th #1 hit, The Happening, live on the May 22nd edition of the show. This would be the last TV appearance to feature the original lineup of the group as only weeks later Florence Ballard would be fired. This performance features the original (and most popular) lineup of The Supremes-From left to right: Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross. The Happening was written by Holland-Dozier-Holland, who had written all The Supremes' prior hits and all their #1's up to 1967, when they they left Motown Records. Ballard was replaced by Patti Labelle & The Bluebelles member Cindy Birdsong, and the group's name changed to Diana Ross & The Supremes. After the name and member change the group never managed to repeat or match the sucess they previously had racking up only 2 #1's as Diana Ross & The Supremes.
1987 - It's 24 years ago today that the great Roy Orbison performed on Saturday Night Live, and as usual gave an impeccable performance. Sadly, though, we can't show you that performance as it has been removed from all video sites, so...howzabout this performance on the Jonathon Ross Show - then a black and white performance tribute to Roy...see if you can spot the stars.
1997 - This is the day that Fleetwood Mac performed the first of two MTV Unplugged specials that would be aried in the summer of 1997. Couldn't find this one anywhere...they've all been taken off youtube-funny how some acts, publishing companies and record companies are so, so foolish by restrictng their audiences. Still, found this amazing, if not sugar-coated, interview with them in Australia in the same year.
2003 - Believe it or not, the final manuscript of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, which was annotated by the composer, sold at an auction for $3.47 million today. To celebrate, here's a version of the symphony conducted by Leonard Bernstein, performed in Berlin, on December 25, 1989.
