1940 - Seventy one years ago today, Jimmy Dorsey and his orchestra recorded what has become a bona fide classic piece of music, Perfidia. The word is Spanish for perfidy, which means faithless, treacherous or false, and is a popular Mexican song about love and betrayal, written by Alberto Domínguez. Aside from the original Spanish version, other renditions exist including English and instrumental versions. The English lyrics are by Milton Leeds, and the song was first published in 1939, becoming a global hit for Xavier Cugat a year later. Perfidia has been recorded by many artists, including Olavi Virta, Café Tacuba, Glenn Miller, Nana Mouskouri, King Tubby, Phyllis Dillon, The Shadows, The Ventures, Linda Ronstadt, Nat King Cole, Lawrence Welk, Luis Miguel, The Four Aces, Olivia Molina, Perez Prado, Phyllis Dillon, Ibrahim Ferrer, and Ben E. King. It was used in the Rio nightclub scene in the Bette Davis film Now, Voyager, but perhaps its most famous usage was during the Paris flashback scene in the classic movie Casablanca, when Ilsa and Rick are dancing to Perfidia in a night club. And so, dear reader, here is Bogie's unforgettable memories of romance in Paris with Ilsa, played by the beautiful Ingrid Bergman in 1942.
1964 - Brit songstress Dusty Springfield made her American television debut on the Ed Sullivan Show 47 years ago today, singing one of her biggest hits, I Only Wanna Be With You. Can't let it go at that, though, because Springfield was surely the first of the British soul singers to break through in the USA and around the world, so how about another Dusty classic, Wishin' and Hopin'. When I was young, I adored Dusty Springfield. She remains one of the great white female soul singers, if not the greatest. Now I'm not a little boy anymore - in years at least - and I love her even more. She remains one of the great influences on acts such as Amy Winehouse and the new wave of Brit femme soul singers. R.I.P Dusty.
1965 - The Rolling Stones produced their very first recordings 46 years ago today when they recorded Come On and I Wanna Be Your Man from the album Out of Our Heads. The song that got them into the charts for the first time, was the latter song, written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney especially for the Rolling Stones. First up the Stones version, followed by the Beatles version. Both recorded within a couple of months.
1968 - The Doors' Jim Morrison incited a riot during a Chicago concert, 43 years ago today. He incited riots in many other places, too, poor Jim. I know there are some avid Jim Morrison fans amongst readers of *MUSICBACKTRACK*, so I'll shut it immediately, and introduce you to The Doors, circa 1968, somewhere in Europe...live.
1969 - The Turtles and the Temptations played the White House on the request of Tricky Dickey's daughter, Tricia Nixon, whose date for the night was Barry Goldwater Junior. Rocklore insists Turtle Mark Volman fell off the stage 5 times during the night's performance, a little tippled. The Turtles were a brilliant vocal duo who eventually joined one of Frank Zappa's bands. Here they do a Dylan cover song It Aint Me Babe. Later they had a bigger hit Happy Together, & probably their biggest hit of all time, Elenore.
1974 - They used to call Eric Clapton, God in the sixties, but it wasn't until the early seventies that the guitar virtuoso began infiltrating mainstream. It was through the cover version of a Bob Marley song, that Clapton's career and private demon-filled life began to turn around. This was the day he covered I Shot The Sheriff - here are two versions, the cover and the original.
1975 - Stevie Wonder and his band, Wonderlove, played for 125,000 people at the Washington Monument as part of Human Kindness Day. Couldn't locate this one, dear reader, so how about this one from five years later, LIVE, Master Blaster.
1985 - They claimed to be the first girl guitar-playing group, but they weren't, nevertheless, The Go-Go's were probably one of the most successful, if one uses hit records as the benchmark...Sadly, though, it was 26 years ago today that the group announced their breakup, and to tip our hats to the girls, here are two of their biggest hits, We Got The Beat and Our Lips Are Sealed.
1986 – The Pet Shop Boys went to No.1 for the first time on the US singles chart with West End Girls, which was also a #1 hit around the world. They duo went on to have so, so many hit singles, but here's their biggest, right now for you dear reader.
1994 - Tupac Shakur began serving a 15-day county jail term for attacking director Allen Hughes on a video set. Same year, when he was on bail, here's Tupac LIVE at the 1994 source awards, this is the orginal version of Out On Bail and not the Eminem remake!
2000 - It's now 11 years since ego metal heads Metallica bully-boyed their way into the internet by forcing the MP3-swapping website Napster to ban 317,377 users from using their revolutionary, very popular file-sharing site. The list is determined by Metallica’s allegations that the users have pirated the metal giant’s recordings. Metallica, the most obnoxiously ego-centric band alive today thought they could stop online music. They thought they could kill off Napster. The greedy bastards don't want anyone else to earn money. But music lovers around the world won as music has propelled the internet, and now we can all access music. Five years later, in 2005, The iTunes Music Store reached 400 million songs sold, and the company also opened in Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Denmark. Napster still exists, and without the help of an overpaid psychiatrist, as was the case with Metallica.
