- The Mozart opera The Marriage of Figaro (sometimes called the perfect opera by Mozart critics), premiered in Vienna 225 years ago today, and still it is a hit!. It's a comic opera, composed in four acts, and written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. The opera is based on a stage comedy by Pierre Beaumarchais, two years earlier.Figaro premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna and Mozart himself directed the first two performances, conducting whilst seated at the keyboard, which was the custom of the day. The opera became one of Mozart's most successful works, the overture especially famous and often played as a concert piece. This is the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra during their 1999 Japan Tour, performing the great Mozart piece.

- One of Tommy Dorsey's many hits, Lonesome Road, was recorded today, and for more Dorsey information and videos, go to our search engine and type in Tommy Dorsey.

- When they first began, in Michigan, in 1959, they called themselves the Primettes. Fast forward six years and they were calling themselves the Supremes, and this was the day in Detroit, Michigan, released the song, Back In My Arms Again. The American female singing trio, were the premier act of Motown Records during the 1960s, their repertoire delving into the melting pot of doo-wop, pop, soul, psychedelic soul, disco, yes, and even Broadway show tunes,. They were the most commercially successful of Motown's acts and are, to date, America's most successful vocal group with 12 # 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Most of these hits were written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland–Dozier–Holland. Their success helped pave the way for future African-American R&B and soul musicians to find mainstream success.

- Elvis Presley and Priscilla Beaulieu were married. They were together until 1973, and two years later Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash married in song, when they taped a TV special at the Grand Ol' Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. The video seems to have disappeared, so this is from the same show, Cash introducing Dylan.

- Jimi Hendrix was arrested at Toronto International Airport for possesion of narcotics and was released on $10,000 bail. Here's a video created by somebody out there, with all the bust details, and thanks to whoever created this.

- Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin combined for the first time on Elton's first American album Elton John. Forty years down the track it is easy to forget just how brilliant Elton John was, how thoroughly different and refreshing and soulful he was...not to mention the brilliance of his voice and piano playing...and the simplicity Taupin's vivid lyrics landscapes. Check out the following live songs from 1970, recorded at the BBC in London. Greatest Discovery, Sixty Years On, Burn Down The Mission.

- Listed as #490 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All time, is the dirty ditty, Brown Sugar, which was released exactly 40 years ago today. It is the first track, and the first single release from the band's 1971 album Sticky Fingers. Like most Rolling Stones songs, writing credits are listed as the singer/guitarist pair of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. But the song was primarily the work of Jagger, who wrote it sometime during the filming of Ned Kelly in 1969, whilst he was in Australia. Originally recorded over a three day period at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama during 2–4 December 1969, the song was not released until over a year later due to legal wranglings with the band's former label, at the request of guitarist Mick Taylor. They debuted the number live during the infamous concert at Altamont on 6 December. The song was written by Jagger with Marsha Hunt in mind. She was Jaggers secret girlfriend and mother of his first child Karis at this important time in his life.

- Paul Simon released his self-titled solo debut album, and for more information on Paul Simon, go to our archive section, or do a search on our search engine. A year later, and Canadian group, Bachman-Turner Overdrive released its debut LP self-titled album, with former Guess Who guitarist Randy Bachman. Here's the band's biggest commercial hit, You Aint Seen Nothin' Yet. Oh well, while we're at it, let's check out their second hit, a year later, Takin' Care of Business, featuring Keith Moon introducing the band...yes THE Keith Moon, totally taking care of taking the piss.

- Marvin Gaye Day was declared in Washington, DC, and for more information and videos go to our search engine or check out our archives. Just 12 months later, the Carpenters performed at a White House dinner for West German Chancellor Willy Brandt, the invitation coming straight from U.S. President Nixon. And on this day in 1977, The Clash started their first tour in the UK, White Riot, at London's Roxy Theater. And thanks to 30KWPA for creating this totally awesome, authentic gem of a bootleg black and white video, from Brighton, England in 1977.
