1721 - As of today, March 24, it is 290 years since Johann Sebastian Bach published the Six Brandenburg Concertos, in Germany. We have featured Bach often as he remains the musical soundtrack of many people's lives, but to celebrate this milestone in his life on this day, here's the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra performing the Brandenburg Concertos No.1 - i: Allegro Moderato.
1941 - It was the first of two motion pictures Glenn Miller made for 20th Century Fox, and Sun Valley Serenade, I think it fair to say, did much for his public profile, featuring such classic musical hits, as it sure did. As a tribute, turn off life for about 10 minutes, and soak up these masterful moments in music history. True artistry and musicianship...not to mention recording, and filming. First up here's the best version of Chatanooga Choo Choo you will ever hear; Then the classic In The Mood, and if you know a better version than this, please let me know.
1958 - Funny how time slips away, dear reader; it has been 53 years since Elvis Presley was sworn in as a private in the U.S. Army, and only a few years after that a new generation had embraced a new batch of rock'n'rollers, amongst whom was the Rolling Stones. Bass player for the band was Bill Wyman, and in 1965 he was knocked unconscious by an electrical shock from a microphone stand, during a tour from the Stones.. It was the first date of the Rolling Stones anniversary tour. Technology, too, now allowed the illegal recordings of some musical acts, and in 1966 The New York State Assembly took steps to attempt to stifle this new cottage industry by passing a bill making it a misdemeanor to sell bootlegs. Of course time has shown us that bootlegging has become a multi-billion dollar business since those days. Indeed, on this day in 1978, The British courts granted British record companies the rights to seize bootleg and pirate recordings.
1973 - It's March 24, almost 40 years ago, and New York's Lou Reed was bitten on his rear end by a male fan during a concert in Buffalo, NY. The male fan was ejected from the show. So the Chinese whisper goes, and continues because the story has never been confirmed or denied. The story goes that the fan was screaming, "leather'' as he jumped on stage. It has been reported that Reed commented, "America seems to breed real animals.'' Whether or not the story was real, this following live performance of Lou Reed at the Olympia in Paris is real and reminds us of the roots of Lou. This is a three-song dose of Lou.
1979 - Six years later on March 24 and the Bee Gees started a two-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with Tragedy, the group's eighth number one hit record. One of the greatest of them all, the Bee Gees.
1992 - A Chicago judge ruled in the Milli-Vanilli class-action suit that $3.00 cash rebates would be given to anyone that could prove that they bought the group's music before November 27, 1990 (the date the lip-synching scandal broke). I can't work out why they would've got someone else to 'sing' this song anyway. But the real crime with Milli Vanilli was their dancing, their pouts and their acting...not to mention their choice of songs - as you can see by the following clip.
